Sorry about the double post; I'm not sure why that happened, other than that I don't understand anything that doesn't start with a crank, including my computer.

In honor of Mother's Day, I thought I would take you on a rather substantial detour. Here is a picture of my own mother holding my oldest sister.
Mom.jpg
In the background is my parent's 1946 Plymouth Club Coupe. My sister was born in March of 1948, so this photo was probably taken in the spring of 1949.

Here is the sales contract for Dad's Plymouth:
Contract.jpg
New cars were scarce after the war. In October of 1946, Dad paid a little over $1300 for the Plymouth. His down payment was $800 and the balance of about $500 was paid in 12 monthly installments of $51. At the time that my parents married in February of 1946 my Dad was earning about $35 a week, so this was a very substantial purchase for my parents. Housing was also scarce after the war. For the first two year's of my parent's marriage they lived in a rented room. In July of 1947 my parent's purchased an acre of land and started building a home of their own. If you do the math, it is apparent my parent's were in a race with the stork. In February of 1948 (one month before my sister was born) one room of the new house was habitable (although there was no central heat, or running water, or even a well at this point) and so my parents moved from one rented room into one room of their own house. About the time my sister was born, or slightly there after, they hired a well driller:
img003.jpg
Here is a close up of the well driller's rig:
img004b.jpg
It would be several more months before they were able to bring the water inside.

With a little luck Mom will turn 95 this August. Mom is living in an assisted living facility in Wisconsin. Mom isn't allowed visitors at this time, so a phone call will have to do.

Thank you all for sheltering in place to keep my Mom, and everyone of her generation, safe.

Christmas in August! Model T wise, it doesn't take much to keep me entertained. At the 2019 Michigan Jamboree of T's I arrived a little early, so I was able to enjoy the parking lot being transformed. First it was a mostly empty parking lot, soon it was a parking lot filled with trailers and tow vehicles. Next it was like opening packages on Christmas morning, all these Model T's emerging from their "wrappings":

A horse of a different color.

In yesterday's post I mentioned that I am partial to 1915 Model T's. Today I thought you might enjoy photos of Jeff Lee's 1915. Jeff lives in Novia Scotia, and he owns a Canadian built Model T. His car has several features, that while they are "as built" in Canada, they appear unique to "USA" eyes. First, the car is a "true" 2 door. No "dummy" door like my USA built 1915. Second, the car is right hand drive. Third, the car isn't black. It is a very, very, dark (almost black) blue. Enjoy:

I took this picture after getting home from a car show. It almost passes as a period photo, but the chain link fence and aluminum storm doors give it away.

Our Touring before the top. My Granddaughter accompanied us on a five day tour 4 months before she was born. The Dudley Garage in Virginia City, MT was much inspiration to me with more than a dozen unrestored Brass Cars. Two T's and a Model S lived there until the '90s.

My home town: Batavia, IL, Part I: "The Big Woods".

We have had lots and lots of rain in my part of the world. In fact, Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) is closed because the sub basements are flooded. So yesterday, between the rain showers, I took my Model T out for my first drive of 2020:
1.jpg
Having mostly exhausted any previous Model T touring material, I thought I would take you on some short tours of my hometown, Batavia, IL. Batavia has been my home for the last 30 years. Batavia is the oldest settlement in Kane County and was originally settled in 1833. The town was named "Batavia" in 1840 by a former resident of Batavia, NY. Before that it was simply known as the "Big Woods". West of Chicago was pretty much all open prairie in 1833, until you came to the "Big Woods". My neighborhood is one of the last remnants of the "Big Woods".
2.png
Here is where I live. We have lots of shade, and lots of wild flowers.
5.JPG
This is my street. Some folks have a weekend get away. I just roll out of bed, and I am here. About a half a mile from my house is what is probably the oldest tree in Batavia.
6.JPG
This oak tree is well over 600 years old. When the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, this tree was already over 200 years old. The yellow car in the background is traveling on Illinois Route 31. The portion of Rt. 31 which runs through Batavia, is also part of the "Lincoln Highway", and is still 4 lanes, 2 in each direction, and was a model highway in its day. Here is another view of "our" tree:

This year's 2020 Golden Gate Tour (leaving next week) did not get canceled. Twelve Model Ts are convening in Mill Valley, CA. on June 1st.
We are pioneers on the way back to the "old normal". And, there are still a couple latecomer spots available if you would like to join us.

Happy touring.

Batavia, IL, Part II

Batavia, like most self-respecting small towns founded before the Civil War, has a monument to the local soldiers who fought in that war. On Memorial Day, it seems fitting to feature our monument here:
9a.jpg
10a.jpg
11a.jpg
12a.jpg
Batavia's monument was a gift from the Newton family, who owned and operated Newton Wagon Works, which made horse drawn wagons. After the family left the business, it morphed into Batavia Body Company, and made bodies for trucks, primarily refrigerated trucks for the dairy industry. If you have an interest in horse drawn vehicles, or if you have trouble sleeping, you can google "Newton Wagon Works Batavia Illinois" and "Batavia Body Company Batavia Illinois" and you will know as much about the subject as I do. The company was a contemporary of the Studebaker Company, and while it didn't become as big as Studebaker, it did out last it. The buildings of the Newton Wagon Works were torn down and replaced by a rather non descript strip mall. A minor consolation to Model T fans, one of the shops in the strip sells ice cream.

I was off the tour for other activities for a few days, but here I am back on the road near Bellevile in a Model T convoy two years ago today. This gives you a clear view of my incorrect windshield. The top glass is supposed to overlap the bottom glass. Making it right is a current project.

Batavia, IL, Part III: Bellevue Place
SAM_2400 (2).JPG
Bellevue Place was an institution for treating mental health issues established by Dr. Richard J. Patterson. Dr. Patterson's treatment philosophy was very progressive for the time. He believed that: peace, quiet, and gentleness were beneficial to the care of those who were mentally ill.

In 1875, Mary Todd Lincoln became a patient at Bellevue after her son, Robert, caused her to be committed. After a stay of about 4 months, Mary was able to engineer her release to the care of her sister, and moved to Springfield, IL. After her commitment, Mary never totally reconciled with her son, Robert. Mary's actual mental condition in 1875 is still debated by historians. Her life experiences up to that point could certainly have traumatized her. In addition to witnessing her husband's assassination, she lost 3 of her 4 children before they reached adulthood: Edward (1846-1850), William (1850-1862), and Thomas (1853-1871).

Today, Bellevue Place is condominiums.

Batavia, IL Part IV: Batavia Limestone

One of Batavia's first industries was stone quarrying. Batavia is located on the Fox River and as the ground slopes to the river the bed rock is exposed. Commercial quarrying started in 1842 and by 1860 at least 10 quarries were operating in Batavia. When Chicago was rebuilt after the fire, much of the limestone used in the foundations of the new construction came from Batavia. Here are just some of the historic Batavia buildings built from limestone quarried in the city.

Well thank you Scott! I grew up in Wisconsin, which isn't quite as flat as most of Illinois. The Illinois Fox Valley is one of the few places in Illinois that reminds me of Wisconsin.

I think we are all blessed to live in such a beautiful world. I do have a slight ulterior motive In sharing my hometown, I am hoping other folks will share a bit of their hometown as well. This forum has such a geographically diverse membership - world wide. What better "arm chair" travel can there be, than to learn a little bit more about the part of the world that each of you calls "home".

OK, technically it's not my town. I live in Parkerfield, official population 426. I like to tell people that Arkansas City, about 12,000, is our suburb. AC was established in 1870 and still has a few nineteenth century buildings. But perhaps more distinctive are the brick streets laid down a hundred years ago. A good many have survived, while most other Kansas towns have destroyed most of theirs.

Batavia, IL, Part V: Where the Buffalo Roam

Maybe you saw this coming, and maybe you didn't, but we really do have a herd of:

The herd actually belongs to the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, located in Batavia, IL. Fermi studies teeny, tiny, itsy, bitsy particles so they can learn stuff. Because the campus is so large, they had to landscape it somehow, so they have an 1100 acre tall grass prairie. With than much prairie, buffalo were a natural.

If your a google maps fan, set your view to satellite, locate the intersection of Kirk Road and Pine Street in Batavia, Illinois, and then go due east. It will look just like the set of a science fiction movie.

As far as I know, we have no antelope, but we do have plenty of:

Batavia, IL, Part VI: The Windmill City

In the later part of the 19th century, Batavia was home to 6 American-style windmill manufacturing companies and became known as "The Windmill City". As you drive along the backroads of America, in your Model T, if you come across a farm style windmill, there is a good chance that it was made in Batavia, IL. It really is a small world. The three largest manufacturers were: Challenge Company, U.S. Wind Engine & Pump Company, and Appleton Manufacturing. The former Appleton Manufacturing plant is now Batavia's Government Center. Today, examples of Batavia manufactured windmills are displayed along Batavia's Riverwalk and through out the city.

It was about this time of year 30 or so years ago that we tour through Jackson Hole and Cody Wyo. over the Beartooth Pass then through Virginia City, MT, Yellowstone and back home. Our friend Lynn's '17 Studebaker died in Jackson so he rode with us in our Speedster and in Norm's '26 Buick.
This is Ollie and Lynn in front of our little cabin in Nevada City, MT.

90Rle4.jpg
That was the last of a dozen week long trips we made through Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Traveling near 100 miles a day was right for seeing the great sights in the area. When we started doing that in the '70s we could find a room wherever we stopped driving for the day or some years we camped out. Later reservations were required and more planning. Now we manage a National tour of some kind instead. I miss the informal "take off and go" times but things change. Since we aren't touring this year I am remembering the one's we did over the years.
Rich
When did I do that?

Everybody is familiar with Pikes Peak in Colorado. For those of you who think Illinois is flat as a pancake, I want you to know, here in Kane County, IL., we have our vary own "Johnson's Mound" which is the highest point in Kane Co. and rises to an astounding elevation of 867 feet above sea level! This is about 200 feet above the surrounding corn fields, so it is certainly a site to behold! So take that, Colorado! On a clear day you can see all the way to DeKalb County. Well you could if there weren't so gosh darn many trees in the way. At any rate, this summer a group of my car crazed friends of all persuasions, have gotten together bi-weekly at the picnic shelter at the top of Johnson's Mound for a "Social Distancing - Self Picnic". On the first picnic I neglected to make sure my low band was properly adjusted, and so I need a little "help" getting to the top. Here are some photos from past picnics. My T is the one with the rope attached to the front axle. Most of the cars that show up are from a different decade. If you ask the man who owns the blue Packard, he will tell you how he purchased the car at 14 years old with savings from his paper route. He gave $700 dollars for it, which was the market rate at the time.

In 1982 we traveled to Emmett, ID. The McCall Labor Day tours started there and we drove up the SH-55 canyon along the Payette River, named the Payette River National Scenic Byway. It is a beautiful drive and in those days the dozens of old cars could make the climb with minimal traffic. The little town of Cascade allowed us to play cars games on their main street. McCall is situated on the southern shore of Payette Lake and is a delightful place for old cars. The next day a drive to New Meadows treats us to Lumberjack competitions.
There were a few Ts on the trip but I was mesmerized by brass era cars including a 1913 Mercer Raceabout.
McCall1.jpg
McCall2.jpg
Also a Velie and a Packard were among the great cars.
McCall3.jpg
A 1976 trip there left me with a broken crankshaft after a day of passing Model As. We only made the Lador Day trip there twice but is was pretty marvellous. I have heard they were still doing the tour but traffic up the canyon was very unforgiving these days.
But this year we are enjoying the peace and quiet at home.
When did I do that?

Ah, the good old days ! Good times for driving antiques, anyway. FWIW, in 1970 the population of Idaho was about 700,000. By 1980 it had grown to a little over 900,000. I guess the 2020 census is complete ? I see a current posting states Idaho's population is now 1,800,000+ and still growing. Traffic on secluded by-ways and even remote trails attests to the pressures an additional million people put on them.

Like many folks, 2020 has been a challenging year for me, due to the restrictions necessitated by the covid virus. I started this thread, in part, as an escape from the reality of 2020, and as a way to enjoy the travels of other folks, as well as relive some of my own travels. I was very much inspired by the photos posted in the "Camping in a Model T" thread, and started this thread with photo I "borrowed" from that thread.

As a "farewell" to 2020, I would like to "borrow" another photo from the "Camping in a Model T" thread, and repost it here:

All in all, I think we are all lucky to live in such a beautiful world. Thank you to the folks that shared some of their travels in this thread. It allowed for some great "arm chair" travel, that was much appreciated.
