In 1959 I had an opportunity to spend three weeks in Australia. Since it was so bloody far away, I figured I might as well go around the world as go out and back. Back then, that was a VERY big deal. The leg from Singapore to Darwin was on a Qantas Connie like the one in the video. It's the only time I was ever on one. From a passenger's viewpoint, not much different from the more common DC-7, but what a gorgeous machine!

WARNING: Thread drift! On the same trip, the prior leg, from Bangkok to Singapore, was on a Japan Airlines DC-6. JAL had a very-well-prepared booklet giving all kinds of information about the plane, how it worked, the sounds we would hear as the gear and flaps were retracted or extended - remember, in 1959 most people had never flown, and the fright level in the cabin was pretty high. But the part that got the hackles on the back of my neck into full extension, a mere 14 years after the end of WWII, was this: "Passengers have no need to be concerned. All of our pilots are veterans of many years of flying in the Pacific." Yeah, right!

It did (tho I also got it off the video)... talk about forward thinking? Then again, commercial air service in 1920 was WAY outside the curve, yet it makes sense it would be in Australia, where (like Alaska) air transport was (and in some cases still is) is the best solution...
