Will not stay ruunning

Hello all !

This might seem like a dumb question but I'm scratching my head on this one.

1926 touring will only stay running if starer stays engaged ? Once you take your foot off the starter button the engine stops.
Normally you hear a coil buzz but I hear nothing,

Thanks in advance Stay safe everyone !

Did you recently "rewire" ? Sounds as though the "hot" wire was inadvertently installed on the "starter" cable post rather than the "battery" cable post.

Do you have a good and active mag in your car? The mag is an AC device so you need an AC voltmeter to see if it's even putting out...

Then you need a good battery (12V is OK) to make sure you have current to the coils. DO NOT cross your battery to your magneto, if you do then we have a whole different remedy for you to follow.

Put the switch on Bat. Go in front, pull the car over for all 4 compression strokes, you SHOULD hear all 4 coils singing. If you don't, you need to fix this.

Doing all this... IF you have a good mag (and if not, it's not hard to zap it back to life, the ford "Black book" has a really good description to do this) you need to make sure you have good fuel (Vaporizer? There's another set of issues, but not insurmountable), and hot spark, and compression.

Since she runs until you flip the switch, my guess is you have a wonky mag, a wonky switch that is putting battery DC into your magneto AC) or you have other ignition issues... but bottom line, your starter (which is a cable from battery to foot switch to starter motor) should NOT affect starting your car... on mag.

Steve's question is extremely intuitive and excellent. Only thing I'd add is that perhaps your timing is incredably retarded and firing extrordinarily late to the point where it won't carry the engine through on its own.

When you find it, let everyone know, as we're only left with WAG's to help.

My guess is wired wrong at starter switch. Move the yellow wire to the other terminal and se what happens.

Turn on your head lights.

If they are only on while you are pushing the starter button, move the small wire to the other starter switch terminal.
