I have a charger whose output is 36 volts and 30 amps. Is this strong enough to charge the magnets in the car or do I need to use 3 12v car batteries

I doubt that 30A is enough. When I have done this job (successfully) with 3 x 12v batteries there was a big spark when I connected.

Farmer Jerry, Search Google MTFCA Tom Carnegie for a very simple detailed method for charging the magnets in the car. Tom is one of the smartest/experienced guys and has researched his method extensively. Multiple Montana 500 winner proves his method as well.

Philip's advice is spot on!

We just charged one yesterday afternoon on a friends '26 Touring and it was easy and the results really great! We used 36 volts from a golf cart battery. Just a quick zap or two does it.

Someone in the neighborhood may have a 36 or 48 volt golf cart. The 36 volt cart, just put your jumper cables to the 2 post that the charger wires go to and you have 36 volt. If the cart is 48, then just follow your wiring and use 3 of the batterys that should be wired in seris "spelling".
Some chargers that put out 36 for a cart, won't put out until there is a voltage from the cart it's self to activate a internal solenoid.

Sorry if my post was not clear about where to find Tom's procedure.

Here is a link to that thread: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/506218/528397.html.

I believe some search engines find different advertisements than others. Hate that

If you've been looking for a compass and wondering where to place the thing and then trying to figure out where N - S or E - W is and which way your car is pointed Read Tom's post!

The procedure is also explained in the Dykes Manual.
