1912 Pie Wagon

I just ran across this photo in an old family album.
The car was built (or rebuilt, I don't know) by my Uncle, George Teters, in Glendale Arizona in the 1970's. Uncle George acquired his first old car, a 1908 Mitchell, in about 1932. Traded a Model T speedester for the Mitchell.
I have no idea where the Pie Wagon is now. Uncle George passed away in the mid 1980's and the only car still in the family is a 1917 Pathfinder.

Yeh, at first I wasn't too fond of them. Maybe 'cause they wouldn't fit in a "normal" garage.
But now with a barn and a 12.5' door, I'd love to have one. They are definitely unique looking.

Beautiful car, Tom. I had never paid much attention to pie wagons, but looking at your car and my uncle's car I notice that both have wire wheels. Was that a style, or is it just a coincidence that these two cars are so equipped ?
Another thing I wondered about, and can't see in the pics of your car: On the blue car, the body sides curve inward from about the tops of the fenders down to the splash aprons. I had assumed the body sides would have been wooden, but that curve is less likely if they were wood. Are your body sides rolled in at the lower 18" or so as well ? Are the body sides sheet metal over wooden formers ?

Dick, Yes the sides were steel over a wooden framework, and thebvbody curved in at the bottom. The rear doors had the same curve at the bottom.The Ford Delivery Car bodies did not have side windows.

A few pics showing the rolling in the body. It is a oak skeleton with aluminum skins. Not original, but the general form to my design. Wire wheels are my preference also.

Yes, I did all the paint work, except for the stripping. Here’s my guy Kevin Hilsabeck doing his magic.

My dad's father owned and operated a French bread bakery in San Jose, CA from 1920 until 1952. He had 2 or 3 "pie wagons" to deliver bread with in the '20's. I don't know if they were brass era cars or black era cars. In about 1925 my dad, age 5 at the time, was riding in one with his dad. The old man took a left turn a little too fast and my dad ended up flying out into the intersection. He wasn't hurt, but it scared the holy crap out of him and my grandfather both.
My dad lived to age 96 and never liked those trucks for the rest of his life, but lacking his negative experience I do!.

Thanks for sharing. My dad knew George and helped him with the glass in his restorations including this pie wagon. My dads glass shop was near Georges place. Not long after George passed my dad purchased the pie wagon from Georges wife. The pie wagon wagon still looks as it did in the 80’s as its only been out a handful of times. It is sitting in one of the garages at my dads shop in Glendale. The only change to it is some advertising that has been stenciled on the side. Photo taken June 2010 last time it was out of the garage.

Thank you for the follow-up, Kevin. I had pretty much forgotten that I had asked the question and certainly never expected a reply by now.
One of Uncle George's grandsons still has the 1917 Pathfinder and lives quite near to you.

Dick, Something about the pictures of the car you have posted looks very familiar. Inside of the last year or so, a very similar piewagon in the same colour scheme was advertised in California, possibly on ebay? Unfortunately I did not keep detail f the add or pictures. However, I think it is to coincidental that a pie wagon with similar/same colours and distinctive wire wheels was listed in the last known area. However, the listed Piewagon appeared to had been stored outside for quite some time and the body had deteriorated considerably. I hope someone else here can remember the listing and maybe help find out where this car is?

I remember what you were talking about. It was a delivery car that a gentleman used as a traveling medicine show performance. It was posted for sale on Craigslist. It was blueish color. It was left outside and the reproduction all wood body was rotting away. Original delivery cars had steel panels stretched over a wooden skeleton.
