Rear Axle Hyatt Bearing: Roller Length

I am going through the Hyatt bearings I have on-hand to find the best useable ones (see my Wanted ad in the classifieds).

I have a couple bearings that check all the boxes: roller diameters are .002-.003 under, cages are TIGHT. However a couple of the rollers look like they are just barely hanging on the dimple. I think if I pushed like I meant it they would pop right off. I thought this might be caused by the retainer rings being bent. However, the rollers in question are just plain shorter. One of them for example measures 3.552” compared to the roller next to it at 3.589”.

I am not inclined to use or repair these bearings but would like to hear some opinions. Also any thoughts on what would cause this condition or if it was that way from new?

I believe all the rollers were originally the same length but some were compressed somehow as they are all wound from flat stock.

So is this normal? Out of the 6 bearings I have, 2 bearings have a couple rollers each which are in this condition.

I have found that to be normal. You'll sometimes find end plates that have grooves that the roller has worn into them. In those cases, if extreme, the roller could pop out. That's the only thing I'd be cautious of.

I've not found that to be "normal" but I did forgot to ask you if the "shorter" rollers were all wound in the same direction which could possibly indicate that bearing came out of an axle housing that was bent or perhaps an axle itself ?
