carbon brush timer

Curious whether folks out there with a 09/10 early timer have sampled brush rotor technology? Does not look like a complicated retrofit, and the performance theory sounds plausible. I have heard and read plenty of negatives related to these early timers, so am curious what fix options may have produced working solutions.
