TT rear end
What is the plug on top of the end cap for? Do you put some oil in there also?

Re: TT rear end
As far as I know it's a filler hole. You take out both this plug and the on the side of the clam shell, then pour lubricant into the upper hole until it starts to run out of the lower hole, which measures the correct level. At least that's how I understand it. Mine is an early TT and doesn't have one. It just makes adding lube easer.

Re: TT rear end
I think it was just for adding a bit of lube to the thrust bearing, but I really don't know for sure. I tried to fill the rearend with that hole and the lube never did go down hardly at all. I too always thought it was for filling the rearend, but it didn't work for me. I never really researched it though. Dave

Re: TT rear end
Put a good shot of diff lube in there, at least 8oz, or as much as it seems to “take”. I believe its there more or less just to pre-lube that rear bearing real good after a fresh rebuild. The internal motion of the gears does not initially supply enough oil to that bearing. Another point of great importance is that the oil level on a TT rear should be all the way up to the bottom of the fill hole on the back of the differential. If it isn’t, then that rear bearing tends to run dry. So much so that the differential can get too hot to touch! This info can be found in the T service bulletins.

Re: TT rear end
I filled mine from that plug if I recall. It took it fine but 600wt didn’t flow like water. You can take cover off and see if it is just full of old lube causing it to not flow down into housing. Not sure how you would fill otherwise.

Re: TT rear end
I took the side plug out and put a Street L in there to fill it with as I didn't have a lube pump. Removed the Street L and replaced the plug when full. Dave

Re: TT rear end
I should check my memory as I may have done tube on cap and filled from lower as well. Street elbow is too easy. Nice. Still thick tacky stuff. Have done a couple times.

Re: TT rear end
For filling the TT rear axle through the filler plug on the housing I used the procedure pictured below.
