Do you need to shorten new original style valves with adjustable tappets?

On the majority, Yes. They make just about all reproduction valves long.

If you are running Ford type valves with the pin that holds spring check your keeper washers. The repro ones are famous for wearing a slot where the pin fits and releases the spring. I would only use good original Ford washers. Or use 351 exhaust valve. Dan

So some things to consider. The adjustable lifters are taller than the original so yes you have to cut your valve stems. If you have valve seats installed you don't have to take off as much. If you don't have valve seats the valve will sit lower and you will need to take off more of the stem. When you measure Make sure that you leave yourself some room to adjust the lifter lower as the valve will seat itself after you run the car a bit. Measure each valve. Use the ford valves. The Chevy ones can end up getting too close to the spring keepers depending on how much you have to take off.

Dan thanks for the heads up. It is a shame bad repro parts are sold for years without fixing.

Robert thanks for the advise. When I get the parts I will measure carefully and grind the stems.

I took 0.100” off my new valves when I installed them with the two wrench style tappets.
