Does anyone have experience pro or con with the new production 12 volt geared starter that some vendors carry?

It's interesting to say the least.
Looks as though the "Bendix Gear" is engaged in the flywheel all f the time.
That raises a concern about longevity.

The Bendix gear is actuated by a solenoid, as per a modern starter. The pic shows it at rest with the Bendix retracted.

So, if this is retracted, that must mean that the gear engages when extended from the position shown? If that's the case, then the bendix gear engages on the front facing side of the ring gear, versus the rear facing side, as with a stock T starter. That being the case, is it necessary to flip your ring gear over so that the lead cuts in the ring gear teeth are now facing the incoming bendix gear?

I have two of these starters and they work great. No you do not need to reverse your ring gear. The gear on the starter has the correct angle to engage the ring gear. I highly recommend this WASP starter.

I have one on my A and it works the same . I took a leap and installed without flipping the ring. Been working great for the last 2 years. It’s a great little starter.

I saw a guy use one on a speedster tour last year. They’re quick and very quiet. Cool little units. He seemed very pleased with it.

Reams Auto Electric shop in the Dallas, TX area will rebuild and rewire your stock 6 volt to 12 volts for $395.00, and they'll include a rebuilt bendix and bendix cover They have one on EBAY 324203613968, as I write.

If you have a hot soldering iron or mini-torch you can modify your existing starter for 12 volt operation pretty easily.

My model A ring gear was starting to move forward. I did not feel like taking the engine out to fix it so I tapped the ring gear back and installed a gear drive starter. Since it engages from the front the ring gear can not move.

I have used it for a couple of years and it works great but it sure does not look like an antique starter.
