Stan, you made me laugh out loud! I appreciate everyone's concerns, but we're still here. Things here are built for that wind, typically. I have several WeatherUnderground stations around me and the top gust was 39MPH. I don't even know when that gust was supposed to have happened. There is a gov't/NOAA weather station out on State 120 that I would bet clocked that gust. We were getting "high profile vehicle blow-over" warnings the other day. It's actually worse near Cheyenne on I-25 and I-70, but when you tell someone you live in Clark, their eyes get wide and they shake their heads.

When NOAA predicts, clouds and 6" snow, we get sun. When they predice a high of 25, we get 50, BUT when they predict -2, we get -15. We're always the extreme of whatever they predict.

It is a great place for T's, but only with the top down...

My daughter, who lived in Wyoming about ten years, says that a popular saying in Wyoming is that the snow never melts, the wind just wears it out.

Scott and Althea, hello from Florida.

It was very windy here yesterday (not like you’re getting) and I took my lifted jeep to the heart doctor 20 miles away and man I was busy keeping it on the road. I should have taken my truck. I gave up keeping it in my lane and was happy just keeping it on the road. :)

Two years ago in April we were bringing Dorene (our 20 touring) to Texas from Oregon in a u-haul truck. We got to Evanstan Wy late one day, arose early to continue east on US80. It was in Rawlins that we took heed of the signs: "Road closed to high-profile light-weight vehicles" and stayed the night there. The next morning we set off east for I25 (winds are usually milder in the mornings). In the span of a mile there were about ten tractor-trailers either laying on their sides, still jack-knifed or blown to the wrong side of the divided hwy. Seems even the heavy weights we no match for that wind.

Yes,there is a bit of fresh air passing through, definitely exceeding the legal speed limit in town. Wasn't too many years ago it even blew a few railroad cars over just east of here. I guess the Union Pacific didn't think that "no low profile vehicles" warning applied to them. Some people say the reason the wind is so strong here is because Colorado sucks so bad but I'm not going that far.

Steve

when my dad asks how much snow we get, I have to tell him "I don't know, it's falling in MT, sailing right by and landing in CO".

A long time ago, I accompanied my dad up to a mountain top communication system relay station requiring service and repair. The wind gusts that day were "somewhat" (well over) "over" a hundred miles per hour on the mountain peak. Equipment buildings were held down by heavy steel cables, and it was very difficult just to walk from the truck, parked in the sheltered side below the peak, up to the buildings. The guys that worked up there regularly pointed to a concrete base alongside some smaller steel cables and said that was where the weather station used to be. My dad asked what the highest wind was that they knew of up there. They replied that gusts of 125 mph happened rather often. However the highest recorded was 136 mph. They added, that they did not know what the actual wind speed was that day. 136 mph was what the wind speed indicator recorded just as the steel cable broke and the weather station blew off the mountain top!

True story! My dad loved telling it for years.

I dearly love Wyoming, worked up there for years, and would gladly have retired there to Big Piney, but the Wife couldn't take the winters. I remember well a trip headed West on I-80, the wind warnings were up, too late for many that had hit it in the night. They had routed traffic to the North and West on 30(?) to get around it. A young girl tried it anyway on I-80, she was pulling a trailer load of horses that flipped, and killed or crippled all of them. When the Highway Patrol got there, we kind of got in a huddle and agreed that shooting them was the best thing to do, they were screaming as only a crippled horse can, and they were way beyond any help or hope. Lots of stories about the winters and wind up there, one has to physically be there though to appreciate it.

Love the Wyoming chain ‘windsock’. We don’t have that kind of wind in south-central Texas but check out this pic of my instrument cluster last August. Would have liked to be in the cool WY mountains then....And the Model T still didn’t need a water pump !!

Several years ago I drove our motor home towing a car west on IS-90 across SD. Was worn out from holding the rig on the road. Stoped to get gas and ask the clerk how they handled the wind every day. She told me they put rocks in their pockets and kept on going. Craziest thing I saw was a golf course along side the interstate. Must have been a true challenge.

I firmly believe that no matter which direction I’m traveling in Wyoming, I’m going to be facing a headwind!!

Stopped for fuel in Pocatello a few years back, another windy place and asked the guy at the gas station if it always blew there. He said that if it ever quit, half the people in town would fall flat on their faces!!

Cheers,

Ron

George, what's that little yellow thing at the top left of your cluster mean? Hope it's nothing serious!

Howdy Noel,
Good eye! That little yellow thingy means that my 2010 Explorer has four Oxygen Sensors and one of them -that makes absolutely no difference in the car’s performance -is broken.😜

G.R.

my wife and I laugh that we just LEFT Florida's hurricanes and came to the one spot that could easily top them. On the other hand, the air is dry and we're at some elevation, so the effect is a little less than you'd think, though it can still be impressive. If our "blows" had the mass of rain within it, it could be a very bad deal...but they don't. Also, 114MPH gust is just a gust, then it settles down to a nice steady 80mph...
