Muncie parts
My new ‘27 has a Muncie (and yes i have RM brakes).
I don’t know yet from his notes if he has had any work done on it though I may find out as I work my way through his meticulous notes I may learn something.
In particular I am curious about the types of seals that can be used on each end. I assume they were some sort of felt originally but would prefer a modern seal if appropriate.
Anyone have any ideas?

I ran a Muncie in my number 28 car for years and had a problem in keeping the gear box full of gear oil. I noticed the the the gear box seamed to pressurize and put oil out of the front and back cluster shaft. I had a buddy of mine make a couple of covers that are held on by drill and tapping the case to make end covers that are sealed. I also vented the top cover with a screw in type vent that will let the pressure excape. I have not put the trans. back into the car as of yet. I can take a picture of this trans if it would be of any help. Tom

I hadn’t thought of that but it makes sense. Everything has to be vented or it will pressurize and leak. I would be interested in pictures as it sure sounds like you did the right thing.

Tom is on the right track. It's been 20 years since I had my Muncie apart to replace the bearings. I do not remember any seals in the thing at all. It relies on gravity to keep the oil contained, which can bee less than wholly effective.
It's hard for me to imagine any pressure buildup. The top od the shifting tower and how the shift lever is installed should provide plenty of venting i would think.

One more thought on the sealing of the muncie. I think that my friend also machined the case (cluster shaft) for a seal before machining the end cap and machining the surface for the cap that helped seal the shaft.

It was many years ago but I found sealed bearings front and rear and then removed the inner seal so the bearing would oil from the inside but seal to the outside that really helped to hold the oil in the trans.
