Detachable low speed band ear

It's time to change the low speed band material on my 26.
The problem is the fellow who last replaced the bands did it while the transmission was out of the car, and apparently he installed the band's backwards, with the removable ear on the side opposite from the pedals.
Does this mean the hogshead had to come off?

I've been able to get bands out that were in backwards. They may get tweeked a bit but it's easy enough to form them back to round.

Your are going to have to take the brake band out in any case. The band would be bent out of shape by not doing so. Then remove the adjuster on the passenger side and the ear, turn the band past the end of the stub shaft and slide it back. You are going to have less interference from stuff on the drivers side to contend with. Dont forget to stuff rags around the brake band nut so it does not drop in to the abyss.

It is easier to get the band out from the reverse band position. I suggest you pull out the reverse pedal, then pull the reverse band. Then if you are luck you and strong you might be able to pull out the low band towards the RHS.
This is one error I haven't made so I can’t say it’s possible or not.
Good luck
