Why is one drive shaft slightly longer than the other?

Pictured are 2 drive shafts exactly aligned at the pinion gear end. One is noticeably longer than the other. Which one is right for a 1925 motor with a 1926-27 differential? The longer one came off of my Touring parts salad car of unknown history when I first took it a part and had all kinds of bizarre hacks on it to make it work. The second one came from a trusted source.

Years ago John Regan was disgusted with the drive shafts being sold at the time, and started supplying new ones correctly made to the Ford prints. If you're a better Google searcher than I am you might find his forum posts explaining the difference. The parts book shows the same DS for all years 1911-1927. Ditto Lang's catalogue.

Ignacio, The shorter trusted one looks more correct. Check your U joint on the shafts to see if the U joint pin hole matches up. I think the longer shaft will stick out into the joint area of the U joint Look on the shafts for Ford logo on the U joint area flats.

Bingo the U-joint did not fit on the end of the longer shaft from an unknown source at all. It fit perfectly on the shorter one from a known source.
