Fan pulley shaft problem

This is probably a dumb newbie problem...I have a 26 roadster and am replacing the fan pulley shaft. When I tighten the shaft nut, the pulley won't spin and if I loosen the nut til the pulley spins it has a lot of wobble and then just tightens up. What am I doing wrong?? Thanks!

Over the years your stop shoulder on the bolt shank is probably gone or the cam washer has been crushed. You can either hold the back of the shaft by a flat spot and then tighten the nut. Best to add a star washer to prevent it from coming loose.
Hope this Helps,
Hank

Barry, the step in the shaft is meant to screw into the holder up to the step. The nut on the end is then just a locknut. If your fan is binding with the new shaft, the face on the bushings needs to be sanded/filed back somewhat to get clearance for the fan.
Hope this helps,
Allan from down under.

Were the bushings replaced or just the shaft? If the bushings were not, then you now have a new shaft in a worn hole.
