Has anyone ever tried to mount a new style wishbone on old style spring perch? I have old style and there is 3/4 inch of threaded shank below the axel, would like to not change them if I could

T;hat is not enough room to get the cotter pin in place. When using the after market wish bone with both the ols style and the accessory, I use the driveshaft pinion nut.

I too recall seeing folks talk about using a pair of shorter rear axle pinion nuts.

The correct nut for the under axle later wishbone has a tapered base which sits in a tapered hole at the attachment point, so a pinion nut should have the same taper machined on it. Without that taper, you are missing out on two or three rounds of thread engagement on a length of thread already compromised by the shorter thread on the earlier perch. I would rather use a standard later tapered perch nut and the appropriate Loktite thread locker.

I personally would install an accessory wishbone brace instead of using a later wishbone with the earlier perches. As has been mentioned before, the holes in the wishbone are tapered and will not accept a flat nut. The earlier perches won't stick through enough to get the full nut on and you wouldn't be able to use cotter pins. With a wishbone brace and a couple drive shaft pinion nuts, it'll work much better.
