spare tire carrier question

I have searched but did not find anything that looked like this carrier. A 30" rim fits it nicely. I want to use it on my '17 roadster. Can't quite see how it mounts. Appears it should bolt to the frame but matching frame holes are not there. Was this an accessory that required drilling holes in the frame to use?

17 did not have demountable rims so no spare tire carrier. The frame will not have holes to mount this. Your carrier is not the normal style.

It does not look like any Ford spare carrier I have ever seen, so I would say yes on the aftermarket. Ford didn't have that sliding piece to hold the rim in place, just a clamp. Looks like the one side that mounts to the cross member is missing a piece, I think that that missing piece is important to the overall strength of the holder.

Your aftermarket accessory rim carrier is made for T's 1919 and later that had the frame and rear crossmember drilled for the Ford style carrier.
To use it, holes need to be drilled. The photos may help.
Seems too, that maybe that accessory was modified? There are welds on the ends of each hanger. May have been on a different make of auto.
Carriers were made for the pre-'19 frames, that mounted to the underside of the rear spring u-bolts.

As Dan says, a frame before 1919 would not have holes for a carrier like that. It's for demountable rims, first used on Fords in 1919.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm still looking for an original Ford spare rim carrier like this:

I had that same carrier on the 24 Runabout I just sold. I remember seeing it discussed in a previous year’s forum discussion, but I can’t find the thread. I believe it was available in the Canadian market. I actually prefer this design to the standard spare carrier. It doesn’t require any tools to mount or remove the spare. There should be a bolt and wing nut that passes through the handle and vertical member of the carrier. Spring pressure from the handle keeps the nut from backing off.

I have a 1919 Roadster and finally used the later 30x3 1/2 carrier on it. That was several years ago and at the time I found out with the forum it was a 1 year only for 1919 and over time it was used on other later T’s. Or so it seems that’s where the confusion began or so I read.
I used the later version since I couldn’t find the “supposedly” correct 1 year only carrier. They were advertised as being scarce. I assumed my car wouldn’t be classed as a pure 1919.
Different information for the same supposedly 1 year only tire carrier out there for sure in the land of it is or isn’t!
