Did a T ever leave the factory with a spare tire mounted on a carrier? My question; Were all spare holders aftermarket? What year is this for?

It would help date it if you can tell whether it takes a 21" or 30" BE rim.

Excellent informative reply Steve...That’s a 2 part spare tire carrier made available in late ‘25 for the ‘New and Improved’ models. The curved round part is commonly called the “gooseneck”. See where it mounts to the rear spring hangers with 4 holes. The other part, commonly called a “Y”, is fairly rare and bolts to the gooseneck at 3 places. It’s for 21” demountable rims used for wood wheels. But without this Y you can bolt Ford 21” wire spare tire using 3 lug nuts...

To add to your i.d.of that gooseneck mount, actually Ford's frame and body spare tire mounts for the Improved Car '26-'27 models, is a three -way carrier.

The mount can hold a Y- bracket for clincher rim 30" tire, or a Y-bracket for split rim balloon tire, or plain, the wire wheel balloon tire.

Parts and Price list, not shown is the Y - bracket #2874 for the 30" clincher rim.

Many of the aftermarkets, although some were made for the demountable rims of 1919 on, were for tires only to be used on non-demountable rims, these types come in design varieties.

Bob, that is a 1926-27 factory installed spare tire carrier for a touring or sedan. The spare tire carriers for coupe and roadster mounted directly to the body.

Bob - most factory photos only show a bare rim attached to the holder - I'm assuming you could pay for a tire and have it mounted.

I sold mine a while back - Lang's has one for sale.

26-27 Pickup running board mount, post is held to body by the top iron pivot body bolt. Either size Y-bracket can be used or without it holds the wire wheel as other mounts.

And while we’re in the STC subject....I either read or heard a long time ago that the circular STC for 23” rims was reserved for sedans only ??.. using this tidbit of (mis)information, I Restored one for use on my ‘19 centerdoor. Would this be anatomically correct ?

I've also read or "heard" that George & have seen a full circle carrier but cannot verify that it was for a "Sedan" or 1919 only when demountables came onto the scene . I also own a '19 Centerdoor - it doesn't have the full circle carrier.

If I remember right, the full circle carriers I seen had a notch in them for the tab on Kelsey 88 rims.
I had a 23 unrestored touring with one and it had 88 rim wheels on it.
Could it be there were for those make wheels? Dan

You might have something there Dan. I removed the spare tire on my centerdoor and it does indeed have a rectangular ‘notch’. We may assume the wheels, rims and tires were installed before the STC was bolted (8 bolts !) onto the frame. Whether it was Highland Park or River Rouge an astute assembler had to recognize the rims maker and select the correct STC...or not ? I don’t have any of the Kelsey 88 rims and the spare fits just fine. So maybe it’s not a ‘year specific’ component but a 23” rim thing..

I would like to hear from our Canadian members about the 88 rims carriers. I think 88 rims were used more up there than in the States.
Although, I did get 4 NOS 88 rims out of a Ford dealership in TN that closed in 29.
