Cleaning a Screw Jack and Spark Plug Wrench

I just cleaned a old screw jack and plug wrench using a degreaser, wire brush and then gas. They clean up well, but there is rust. I want to paint both. Should I soak them in white vinegar? Any suggestions regarding primer and paint??

I like to use a Phosphate solution to dissolve the rust, it also will remove an latent oil/grease.
Menards in Ames has Krud Kutter® The Must for Rust® Rust Remover & Inhibitor - 32 oz.
https://www.menards.com/main/paint/solv ... -19344.htm
There is another product Krud Kutter® Rustex® Rust Converter
https://www.menards.com/main/paint/solv ... -19343.htm
I have not tried Sunnyside® Rust Remover Bath - Checked
https://www.theisens.com/search/?keywor ... ver&mpp=24 and they have these products as well.
I let the parts dry and then wire brush off the residue. Finish looks "blued". Sometimes I just use a clear coat on things like tools instead of primer and paint. For parts I like Rust-oleum Self-etching Primer and their Low gloss Black Farm Paint.

Evaporust works well. I used Rustoleum satin black on my jack and it has held up well. No primer needed.

I won't say never, but I've seen plenty with no trace of paint. I believe most if not all were unpainted. That doesn't stop me from painting my jack. I leave the wrenches bare and oil them.

Steve, I was of the same opinion, until I found what I believe was a new old stock shelf damaged unit with chipped black paint on it. I too, paint mine these days, except for the screw.

Steve, Do you brush or spray paint your jacks?
