Need ideas on weird noise

Post by Dennis Prince » Fri Sep 04, 2020 8:12 pm

I have a 26 touring that has a noise coming from the water outlet, worst where the fan pulley bolts on. It make the noise worse when you put the pulley back on(no fan and a ball bearing pulley) but it still makes the noise without the pulley, the rest of the engine sound like a sewing machine. It has had this noise for a while but where it is coming from makes no sense. Any Ideas? Thanks, Dennis

Does it make the noise when the belt is off? If not then your noise is in the fan assembly. You either have something scraping or the bearing is worn out. Yes a ball bearing can wear out. You will just have to start checking things out.

Thanks Norm, If you reread the original post it does it without the pulley (and belt ) on it, the pulley and fan seem to work kind of like a speaker to magnify the noise but it is very much still there with everything removed.

You should check the generator. Sound can travel in strange ways. I once replaced a transmission in a modern pickup because of a noise coming from it. Still had the noise and soon found it was only a bad bearing in the alternator.

It could be a worn timing gear. Especially if you have a fiber gear. You might be able to see the teeth on the cam gear by looking through the oil filler as the engine is slowly cranked around. or if you do remove the generator as suggested by Jim. check very carefully the bearings on the generator, and the gear on the generator, and you can look through the opening as you slowly turn the crank to see how the camshaft gear looks. Also notice whether the gear might be loose on the cam shaft.

I have replaced the timing gear, took out nylon and put in aluminum, no excessive end play on cam, have run it with a block off plate for generator and no change. I drove it to coffee and took a stethoscope and everyone agreed it is a weird noise but no ideas, a couple of them said that if their motor was that quiet they would be delighted. It is easier to lower my standards than raise the quality so I am going to see if I can live with it. Thanks for the help. By the way Dick, I can't even find the ash tray.

Click and Clack always suggest getting a 3' piece of rubber hose, like vacuum hose, and using it like a stethoscope. You put one end in your ear, and touch the other end to various points, and try to see where the noise is loudest. It's crude and not particularly exact, but it can be very effective.

It would also help us help you, if we knew what the noise sounds like. Is it a rattle, a squeal, a tick-tick, or what? Is it variable according to the engine speed? And if so, how does it vary?

I don't know what happened to the post that described the noise but it is more of a valve tick than a rod knock noise, it changes with rpm and makes it hot or cold, it changes speed but not intensity.

Denis, I had a weird noise in my Henrietta. Then I heard the same noise in my 1912 van. Have you checked your hearing aid? it worked for me! :D

Have you checked the pin which goes through the crankshaft pulley and crankshaft? If that pulley is loose, it can move up and down as the crankshaft turns. It will usually be loudest at idle and will decrease or stop at higher speed. That noise is a loud clicking somewhat like a loose valve tappet. The crankshaft pulley could also be loose and making a noise.

Have you removed the timer and see if there is anything loose in that area? Loose flapper or roller or? Agree with a post about sound traveling here and there. Has it gotten worse or just as is steady.

reading your discription , and all other's thoughts of what could be the noise, i think norm',s makes the most sense, because connecting the fan assy makes the sound worse, the crank pulley as you know is the only thing connected with the fan, so i would check that crank pulley very close, good luck to you.

I hadn't checked the pinch bolt on the aluminum pulley but it was tight and no movement from the pulley, Thanks for the idea it did seem to make the most sense. With a stethoscope there is no noise coming from the timing cover, only from the water outlet.

The early type 26 fan assembly with the lock bolt at the bottom was prown to cracking and breaking. Even if it is the late 26 style, I would take the outlet and fan assembly off check everything out and replace the fan pulley with a new ball bearing pulley.

This is waaaay outside the box, but maybe there is actually something inside the water outlet making the noise. For instance, someone could have put a thermostat in there, and its flapper has gotten loose and is waving around. Or, maybe some kind of piece of something has migrated there. The only way to make sure is to take it off, which will cost you at most the cost of a new gasket.
