I just found out from Randall Anderson, that Snyders is now selling stock rear axle shafts. Good to hear!

Bob: They are reproductions made from 4140 steel, heat treated to Ford specs & surface ground, and are Ford dimensions EXCEPT 1/16" longer. They have a laser-etched trade mark, "GN" inside an oval mid-length on the axle. The portion inboard of the gear keeper is a slip fit on the gear so it's easy to align the gear and key way, outboard of the keeper grove the axles are same diameter as bearing surface (1.062") which is approximately a 0.001" interference fit with original Ford gears. I found the press fit required about 1,700 pounds to install the used Ford gears. The new woodruff keys (nominal 0.250" thick, measured 0.2490") were tight in both axle and gear keyways, but did not require 'press' fitting.

Some have recently commented the hub end keyway is too narrow. I measured the axle hub keyway width and got 0.2465". This is a spare axle so I have not installed it or mounted a hub to it--yet. Hope this helps, jb

Actually, the ones Larry is speaking of are totally stock in that they are made exactly to original Ford specs, as I understand it. They don't have the extra 1/16". Therefore they would be perfect for my NOS hubs. Also they are made from 4130 steel, not 4140 as the added-length units are.

That's because some people actually come here to LEARN, (versus showing off how much they already know), and not to be chastised or insulted because they haven't spent 50 years in this hobby. Too bad that those with a huge amount of valuable knowledge have to use it to belittle others, rather than to educate.
