MODEL T REPAIR BOOMING

Post by Novice » Tue Sep 08, 2020 6:06 pm

Last Week I called Ross Lilleker. Mr Model T in College Station,TX. Checking on picking up a car and doing some minor work. Haven't heard back from Ross. Got a text back from His Wife Jennifer. said He is booked up for several Months. super busy with jobs that were bigger than anticipated. Guess that's where a lot of folks Stimulus money is going. Ill check back about Thanksgiving ? Seems like auto repair in general is busy right now. most Garages I drive by have all their bays full.

I can see that. Now that some aren't driving daily to work and back it time to get some of the squeaks and leaks repaired. Doing some repairs on my truck as well during this "quiet" time. As far as stimulus money goes, I haven't seen any.
Just give me time to Rust and I'll be good as new. :) Wabi-Sabi

I’ve been out to Ross’ shop several times and he’s always been busy. I’ve always thought that was a great thing.

He’s right there near Texas A&M and always has a few college students working for him.

I’ve been in the old car hobby for a long time but only four years with Model T’s and there’s an energy with this branch of the hobby that is different. And I don’t see it diminishing...just the opposite.

The old guys who grew up with T’s as used cars are all but gone. The owners now want them for what they are (quirky, beautiful, and fun) and what they mean to the history of our country. No other old car checks all those boxes.

Right there with you Henry. Love to hear the positive note on the future of our affliction. So many dreamers are talking about not having private cars and only robot driven cars in the not too near future that somehow does not compute in my head. Just my thought on the subject. Frank

Not all sectors of the economy are hurting. I have a friend in the antique car maintenance business who is booked thru December.

Maybe because it is a comforting and very fun hobby that takes people away from all the problems in these days. I get into my garage and all the junk goes away.

I am a General Contractor. I am booked out through next June. When this COVID
business hit, people stayed home more, saw work they wanted done, and set my
phone on fire. It's been insane. On top of that, since I employ vets, I called my vet
recruiters with various agencies. All have been pulled off those duties and reassigned
to handling unemployment claims. They add that no one wants to work, with all the
gov't. cheese being handed out. I cannot find good help.

======================

That's interesting to know it is similar in other regions. I had a guy on FB go on a
total meltdown rant about how full of ______ I was, saying he worked in a large
company's HR Dept., and they are destroyed for any hiring and have people applying
all the time.

I told him to send some of those people my way .....

Same thing here. Getting materials is a huge problem now. Treated lumber is almost impossible to get. I need 3 sq of white vinyl siding for a repair job. I called my supplier and was told 3 weeks at least. White double four vinyl is the most common and everyone stocks it normally. The trailer factories are shutting down because they cannot get materials.

Im not sure why but I susspect a labor shortage. I have a house, a big barn and a large deck job to do. Material prices have went up by 1/3 in some cases. My salesmen are telling me to add 20% to any quotes I put out? Their pricing for material has always been good for 30 days. Now they say 48 hours. The hurricane and wild fires wont help this at all.
I may have time to work on my model T's soon.

The Federal Government has created a new class of welfare with high end cheese 🧀 payouts.

Some folks just don’t want to work 🙄

I hope it improves for you Dallas.

My number one selling item (disposable nitrile gloves) have been completely unavailable since April because the Feds mandated that they all go to the health-care industry. The manufacturer says they'll resume shipments to us in October. It's hard to take your biggest seller off the table to half a year.

Two month wait to get vinyl windows for my house manufactured and delivered. The local couch factory is making and selling product like gangbusters from people staying at home and spending government checks. My practice essential service never closed, numbers about average, and lately are over the top. I have time to work on the Hay wagon to speedster T project because my children activities chauffeur duties have been suspended for now. :D -- IV
