Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
In 1982 we visited the Museum in Los Angeles and saw this Red Model T. I heard more about it later but don't recall it's connection with the MTFCA. Perhaps it has been talked about in previous threads. Their cars were displayed with terrific backdrops at that time. Now the cars are in a warehouse in Gardena so I heard.
Anyhow, I was pleased to run across these old photos from that visit today.
Rich
Jim Zorich was curator when we were there and opened a couple of hoods for us. Shown below are the Pierce Arrow and Welch motors. Also on display was the #8 Stutz race car. Jim drove that one on an HCCA Tour in Sun Valley, ID in 1975. What a treat to see and hear it in action.
Apparently the 1902 Tourist that David Rice drove and maintained on many 1&2 cyl tours is part of the collection. David and the car were so delightful.Anyhow, I was pleased to run across these old photos from that visit today.

Re: Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
I think I was still in elementary school in the early fifties when I saw the old cars at the museum. After nearly seventy years I don't recall the details, but I do remember being impressed by the huge size of the Pierce Great Arrow.
The inevitable often happens.

While I have the book out, it would have been Monstrous at that age.

Re: Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
The Model T in the Los Angeles Natural History Museum used to belong to my Family .
It is Model T # 714 , my Dad bought the car in 1953 & was the third owner .
It is a very original car & had original paint & upholstery when my Dad got it .
It was sold New in 1909 in Colton Ca. In 1918 it was traded in on a new Ford at the Banta & Smith ford agency in Colton .
The dealer kept the car for years . Mr. Smith left the agency & kept the car , storing it at his brother-in-law's plumbing shop in Pasadena Ca.
That is where my dad discovered in 1951 , it took him 2 years to talk Mr. Smith out of the car .
My dad restored the car & we toured it & enjoyed it for many years .
In 1962 , when I was 10 years old , my dad taught me how to drive in this car !
My Dad sold it to Bill Harrah for his museum in 1965 .
When the " Harrah's Museum" down sized after Mr. Harrah's death , the car was auctioned off & ended up in the LA museum .
I now work part time for the LA Museum & part of my job is to look after this car .

Thanks for that Pete. That sounds like what I was trying to remember about the car. How wonderful it must have been to grow up around those cars. I was fortunate to attend a few tours with your Father and his brother as well as visiting your home after one of the Holiday excursions. What great influences those folks were.

Re: Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
Rich's beginning post brought back a memory for me. I attended the tour in Sun Valley, Idaho back in 1975 with my 1913 2 cylinder Indian Motocycle. Early one morning I was out on the grass where the cars were parked and Jim Zordich was warming up the Earl Cooper #8 Stutz Racer. I went over to see the car and to my great surprise Jim asked me if I'd to go with him to get gas, he sure didn't have to ask me twice. It was a short ride but what a thrill to ride in such a famous automobile!

I had heard that all the cars from the Natural History Museum were transferred to the Peterson museum. Of course Jay Leno would up with the MoPar Turbine car.

Burger, I don't recall the year of the Pierce but after looking at several photos I would guess a 1908 or 09.
Philip, so you got to ride in that monster. How astounding is that? Here are a couple more photos of it. Is this your 1913 Indian? Small World.

Chris Haynes , the LA museum cars were on loan to the Petersen museum .
They have all have been returned back to the LA museum warehouse , where I take care of them ( part time ).
LA still has it's Chrysler Turbine car . I believe Jay got his directly from Chrysler .

Re: Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
Rich, I did indeed get a ride in #8. I snapped a couple of photos looking down the hood of the Stutz as we were going down the road, if I can find them I'll post them. That was a real thrill for me riding in that racer.
That is me with the Indian. The photo on the left was more than likely taken on the 2nd day as the headlight was removed. It had vibrated so much the first day I couldn't keep it tight so just removed it.
The fellow on the other side of me is the late Wayne Weathers. Wayne was a fellow member of the Santa Clara HCC Club and a real genuine gentleman and all around great guy. I remember that young fellow, he really liked the Indian and was always close by.
The photo on the right shows the headlight mounted. May have been before the tour started as it looks like I was polishing up the old Indian, those white also tires also look spotless. I was always cleaning them.
One more thing I noticed in the photo on the left was just the edge of Harrah's 1913 Stanley Mountain Wagon that Cal Tinkham drove during the tour. Seeing and watching the Stanley in action really put the steam bug in me. Great Memories!

That was a fantastic assemblage of cars and folks. Is that Phil Reed in the photo at right above? He had his yellow T speedster there.
I believe this is Chauncy Cassidy talking to Cal about material specs for boiler tubes. We were in awe of them.

Perhaps I should get this on topic with photos of Phil Reed's Speedster. This is not to be confused with "Daffodil", the Speedster he helped to assemble as a fund raiser.

Wayne, you probably will recognize the 1902 Tourist that David Rice drove on so many tours. I mentioned it earlier as belonging the the LA museum.
Dave graced the pages of the HCCA Gazette with so many wonderful stories and great information. When did I do that?

Hi Rich,
This posting is old but I found it interesting to see the cars you photographed in the Natural History Museum in LA.
My shop is restoring one of the four remaining Welch motor cars and we've been hunting for information on the survivor in the museum.
They've just not been able to send us any information.
Any chance you have more pictures of this Welch from your visit in '82?
Thanks,
Harry

Re: Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
Hi Harry. I sent you the 4 pictures I took in '82. How nice to see you are working on a Welch. I would love to see pictures of the one you are working on. Others here would enjoy them too.
I'm happy these old photos are serving some purpose and someone beside me might like seeing them. The other info here is so great to see.
I have a 1940 HCCA Gazette with an article by Ranson Mathews. He talks about the L A Museum's acquisition of the 1908 Pierce Great Arrow 60-65 H P Touring and several other cars from the T. C. Wohldruck estate. Likely, the Welch was a part of that. Perhaps the Gazette files have other photos. These stories are fun to read.

Re: Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
Here is another photo of the LA Welch that appeared in the HCCA Gazette Vol. 41, No. 6 (1976). I sent it to Harry along with James Z's address etc. from 2019 roster. It mentions H. H. Welch as donating it as the first car to the museum. Others may know more about the Harrah's Welch.
You may have noticed I enjoy these things.
Rich
I spend several hours jotting down locations of interesting cars in my collection of Gazettes years ago. That reference has come in handy several times since them. There is also a Welch article in the Vol. 56, No. 6 issue. You may have noticed I enjoy these things.

Rich Eagle, I remember a long time ago, when the two Welch's were on display at the Natural History Museum.
Harrah loaned his to the museum for display.
Some time later, one of Harrah's top guys from his museum was driving the Welch on a HCCA tour and was rearended.
The car was hit pretty hard. Harrah had his guys completely redo it.

Doesn't the museum also have an early engine in the 700 serial range?

Re: Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
Thanks for the info, Pete E. I'm glad you get to see those.
My wife reminded me when I mentioned you post today, about the 80's 1 & 2 cylinder tour where your Father and Uncle had their Buicks. They watched as another, much younger owner was trying to start his Buick without luck. One brother finally said to him "Would you like me to have my brother crank that?"
I didn't know them well, but they were so delightful to be around when I was young and impressionable.
So, seeing your posts always is a treat to me.

Rich Eagle, yep, my dad & uncle were pretty fun guys to be around.
They lived brass era cars, especially my dad.
My dad was a good teacher, I wish I had been a better student! (haha)
I'm trying to make him proud.

Re: Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
I have been looking through my memorabilia for the date of the Orange Blossom Tour put on by the Riverside Club, but haven't found the date. I think it was sometime around 10 or 15 years ago. One day we drove from Riverside to Knott's Berry farm and on the way we stopped somewhere around Fullerton and on a hill we saw a very early Model T. Unfortunately, I looked at the outside of it but didn't really look at the pedals. Later the members on the tour were discussing it and said it had 2 pedals. I wish that I had taken a better look. It is possible that was the one in the first picture. Anyway, I have seen one, but didn't really examine the pedals

Pete: You were so lucky to have a father like your dad. I really liked your dad, and I think he did a good job teaching you!

Re: Early Red T in Natural History Museum in Los Angeles
While we are waxing nostalgic, this 1982 photo shows the elegance and beauty of the of the ladies' costumes along with the wonder of the old cars.
How lucky was I to be invited on those tours before I got a 2-cyl car. Maybe that made it all the more magical.

Mrs. Rice in the '02 Tourist mentioned earlier and perhaps Mrs. Eastwood visiting. It is possibly an Eastwood Buick at left. How lucky was I to be invited on those tours before I got a 2-cyl car. Maybe that made it all the more magical.
