The T and friends.

Post by Dallas Landers » Sun Sep 20, 2020 7:29 pm

A bunch of my buddys and our wives went to Silverlake Michigan this weekend to drive the back roads. My little T sucked up every tree root, rock and sand pit we could find. Pretty good company with a 29 Durant, 31 Grahm Paige, 25 Dodge Brothers, 28 Dodge Brothers, 29 Chevy and my 26 pickup. The T performed like it was made for these roads, which it was. I could feel the body flex and was told the rear wheel was off the ground climbing over some of the terrane.

After supper friday we had to start our run with ICECREAM!

It was pretty cold and the girls warmed their hands on the radiator shell. The T didnt mind!

Silver Lake... that's in Oceana County. In 2006, my son was on staff at Camp Miniwanca in Stony Lake, and Anja and I drove up to spend a week there. We decided to trailer the T with us, and used that as our transportation while we were there. Loved wandering around the back roads.

Dick, we were on a road like your 2nd photo and a lady in her modern car flagged us down. She said her husband was working on a Model A down the road a couple miles and we should follow her because he would like our cars.

The side trip just ads to our adventure. We arrived and a Model A roadster pickup pulled in behind us. It was her husband. We talked a bit and looked over his pickup. He asked if we wanted to see his other cars? Does a kid want candy??? We were treated to a huge suprise! A 1914 Cadalac touring, a 1915 Rolls Royce, a 1913 Rolls Royce !!! Around the world touring cars. Many photos of his cars and the couple touring oll over the world. What an unexpected find in a pole barn out in the country.

After mopping up all the drool, he came out and went around each of our cars asking questions and visiting. A real gentelman and his wife.

Where are the pics of the Rolls Royce's?

I saw this one last summer. I think that is Eric Hylen to the left - looks like his shoes.

Dallas, this thread is taking me back. Anja and I had planned to visit our son in 2006, and were going to tent camp in the same campground on Stony Lake Road (off US31 at New Era) that we had been staying at for over 20 years (Holiday Campground, family-run and very pleasant). Because we had participated in Model T tours all around the country (Kentucky to Utah and many points between), I thought that, since were driving the Explorer, we could hook up the trailer and take the T with us. We set up the tent and our camping gear, then put the Explorer and trailer in a nearby field and the T became our transportation for a week. Unlike organized Model T events, the T was just our car -- we drove it to Miniwanca to visit Matthew, drove it to New Era to get groceries, drove it to the beach, and - as I said above - wandered around Oceana County. We didn't have the advantage of someone who knew the county roads, but when we came to an intersection, we picked a road and followed it. Fortunately, the weather was nice the whole time. (When you're driving a Model T and when you're tent camping, rain is seldom your friend.) I really have good memories of that trip.

Now that's a great road to travel to get to a Portal of greatness/cool Dallas!
You're truly a respectful gentleman. Knew that already. Thank you for NOT allowing photos out.
Certain that the fellow was appreciative also.
That drool-time must have been priceless tho. Wonderful. :)
Since I lost my mind mind, I feel more liberated

What a great time. The non-Fords look intriguing.
You really have to drive where you "feel the body flex" to understand much of the Model T's design. I don't get off the road much any more but put the Racer through it's paces in years gone by. It's amazing where they will go and how much twist and turn they will endure.
Thanks for taking us along with the photos.
Rich

Sorry, my co-pilot was using my phone for photos. She held it upsidedown I guess. It was a fun trip with no destination except home before dark. Exploring back roads led to a few turn arounds in farm lanes and dead ends. All part of the fun! All the cars ran original equipment they came with but my T with the Muncie. The only guy running 12V was the 25 Dodge Brothers and that is ok. :D
