Never noticed a difference before.

Driveshaft housing on my current touring is a tapered tube.

Driveshaft housing on my bare chassis is "stepped".

Why the difference?

Some believe the stepped torque tube was introduced with the "Improved" Ford or somewhere in that neighborhood.

Later production cars after around about 1924 used the step design but not all. Just a Ford design change for cost I guess. Ford did the same thing with the Model A tubes having differences over the production.
