Anybody know what this is for?

Possibly to pull spring perches?

Perhaps a couple different angles/views will help us assist in helping to determine it's purpose.

Now that would be interesting to know what this tool is. Got to see a perch puller.

Here's my perch removal tool - not sure if I ever found a maker's mark !

I did not take any other picture. Basically it is a block of steel with that threaded screw through the middle. The screw is about 3/4 inch diameter. The steel is about 3 inches x 11/2 x 1 inch thick. The screw is about 3-4 inch long with a bevel cup on the end. I can’t figure how it can pull a perch.

I have to say would a puller of any sort pull a perch? Maybe if the perch hadn’t been in an axle more than a few years but after nearly 90+ years I don’t see how! But anything is possible I guess but the perch’s I’ve removed it usually took the always reliable heat wrench.

Because the spring shackle loop is offset to the thread, I can't see how a puller can work. A PUSHER would more likely be of use, working from the under side. There the load can be applied directly to the threaded end of the perch without any offset.

I think the puller is a type that pushes the parch out from the bottom of the axle.

That's how mine works - I used the word "remover" as it doesn't "pull" as much as it "presses" the perch out - this tool is "hell for stout" !

My perches were just swapped out. It took a lot of heat and 30 tons of pressure on the press. I doubt that screw type puller would have had any effect on it.

I had no idea how important the ball pein hammer was to the assembly of a T!!! Seems like there should be a chart showing the proper hammer to use on each component of the chassis...?

If it don't fit, don't force it. Simply use a bigger hammer.

I find this tool odd because most perch removal tools are perch pushers not perch pullers all that I have seen attach to the axle and push the perch out . I have an Abco perch pusher it has four arms that hook the top side of the axle with the screw part at the bottom to do the pushing . I used it on the 12 it worked great.

Steve, does that puller slide onto the axle via the small end near the kingpin and then engage on the rather narrow lip around the boss through which the perch is installed? Seems to me it would work well if the perch was not rusted tight, but would struggle if a heavy load was needed to shift the perch due to the narrow ledge it is pulling against.

I’ve been reading with interest about the spring perch removal tool. There are probably axles out there that haven’t been exposed to lots of weather and the elements to get heavily rusted up after almost 90+ years. It seems that those might be the ones that maybe the axle puller tool could be used to pull or ‘press out ‘ a perch.
After looking at the Ford Service Manual I found two places where it’s mentioned about removing and installing perch’s. BUT it’s assuming that the cars are either in current production or maybe several years after and not with axles that are 90+ years old.

When installing a perch it recommends using a arbor press.

In removing a perch using the weight of the car plus using a lead hammer to loosen the perch is recommended.

No type of puller tool or press type puller is mentioned.
Evidently the aftermarket makers came up with a puller type tool that could be used.
So Ford didn’t make a perch removal tool or ??

I don't know why it works ,a friend had 5 axles headed for the scrap pile because the perches were stuck he put them on his big press and used heat they would not budge. With my perch pusher I was able to remove 9 of the 10 perches with out to much effort. This is how mine work.The fuz go away if you click on it

Yes Allan, it slips on and you slide it over to the perch. I've removed perches with it but as stated above - if it's been outside exposed to the elements, I use heat and my 40 ton press using a thread protector.
