3-Piece Bendix cover.

I just wanted to share my “new” 3-piece Bendix cover that I just got. It only has a small dent in it that needs to be straightened out. After I get around to doing that I will have to send it out to get zinc plated.

You can see how it compares to the later style Bendix covers.

This one is 3-piece construction with the top and bottom welded in place and the body piece being seamed together.

I have the early F.A. starter and generator with the early/different style cover for the brush end of the starters and generator, shown on page 277 of Model T Ford by Bruce McCalley (changed to the more common T-5101 cover band later). I also have the square cutout but I still need to find an early ignition switch with the cast handle and then I should have everything correct for the early lighting/electrical system.

I have several of the "early" Bendix cans and mine are not a 3 pc. construct - they're stamped & they are the same height as the later pressed steel cans.

Addendum: I might have a spare '19 cast switch plate - but don't believe I have an extra exposed movement ammeter, though.

I have these. Should be enough to put one together. Tmorsher@icloud.com I may have the switch plate, too.

I was moving some parts the other day and pick one up that has the slotted holes, no reinforcing lip and is quite heavy. Was think it might be early, not as early as the one shown above.

Could those "odd" bendix covers have been from aftermarket makers? Many parts were. Just a thought. Dave

Definitely not aftermarket. The 3 piece cover was only used from late December of 1918 until mid-April of 1919. Not a "rare" part, but also not a "common" part either.

DEC 24 Acc. 575, Box 11, #718, Ford Archives
Bendix cover flange, T-1767; cap, T-1762; and shell, T-1766, replaced the one-piece design. The assembly part number was T-1763. (The one-piece design was reinstated April 17, 1919, (Acc. 575, Box 11, #727).)
