I want to install a VW oil pump in my engine and i have questions and need advice, were can i get my crank drilled for oil passages if i decide to go that way. Trying to find a Sherman deep sump pan with no luck why its looks racy. The parts sellers sell one just do not like no fins will have to make one with fins! oil pump 3 different gear sizes larger gears more volume and pressure or a VW dual pump for a dry sump oil tube size? what size for oil pick up and check value. were do i find an adjustable oil presser regulator or can i pipe in a manual bleed off value with a gauge back into the engine i i think that will work. If i keep the dippers i will install dams under the dippers in the splash pan that and i will have to make with oil sprayers this is my project for next year and i am rounding up the parts if you have installed VW oil system before i need your advice

The VW oil pump is a submerged style pump, meaning fully submerged in oil. Using them in my experience opens up a can of worms for multiple reasons, others may differ and again, this is in my experience. My Dad started with one when I was in service and was constantly having pressure issues, ie, losing prime, etc. Mounting on the rear of the cam causes galling due to trapped air (cavitation) and raising higher than the oil level. Galling also occurs due to linear growth of the camshaft during the engine coming up to temperature causing excessive wear on the rear housing resulting in lower oil pressure. An original design VW boxer engine cam shaft is half the length of a T engine and their cams share the same lope for two cylinders. They can handle linear growth by designed length. I have been using a Datsun B210 oil pump for years (Have plenty in stock with adapters) with excellent results. Les's mod appears to be an excellent option too as it has compensation for linear growth by means of the gear lash. Another option I have used is a belt driven oil pump with a no/low oil pressure engine kill pressure switch. Use a momentary push to start button to start the bypass until oil pressure is reached overriding the safety. No since taking a chance and expenses on a high dollar engine.

Just my $0.03,

Hank

Rich- I have VW pumps/mounting brackets in stock, as well as the oil sump shown in the pictures below. You asked about an oil relief valve for the pump. The filter bracket shown in the picture with the sump has a built in adjustable relief valve. I have these available as well. I caution you regarding using a manual valve to control oil pressure as its not a real good long term solution. The oil pickup in the picture shown is in the oil sump with a removeable circular inlet screen. There is a baffle in the sump to control oil surge.
Send me a PM if you are interested. There are a few tricks to making a VW pump reliable when mounted as shown. Glad to answer any questions.
