1926-27 Bumpers???

Does anyone have experience installing front and rear bumpers on a 26=27 Fordor or Tudor using those as advertised by Lang’s or others?

Not the new repop ones, but original bumpers. All bumper mounting holes in the frame were pre drilled for the 26-27 improved cars at the factory. You need to put a side load on the brackets when installing the bumper bars. The Ford Service Bulletins provide step by step instructions with pictures, worth reading. If you do not have the Service Bulletins they are available free on line, search for cimorelli model t digital library. Rear bumper brackets are different depending on body style and bumper style. There were 2 styles of rear bumpers, the full length bumper bars for 26-27, and short bumperetts that do not cover the spare tire that were available in 1927. I do not know the details of the bumperetts, but I researched the long bar bumpers at the Benson Ford Research Center and found there were two different bumper brackets for the rear bumper depending on body style. The brackets for the full length rear bumpers need to be a few inches longer for the coupe and roadster to clear the spare tire which sticks out farther than the sedan and touring spare tire. I believe the repop rear bumpers are the longer coupe/roadster brackets, of course they will fit a sedan but stick out farther than originals.

I’ve used the repro rear brackets on my ‘27 touring, they fit fine, into the factory frame holes, no issues. For the front used original brackets. And used powder coated original bars with the repro clamps and center medallion.


Note this ‘26 from a photo posted earlier, these rear bumpers are aftermarket accessory, not Ford style. Larger clamps and medallion and bars are a bit narrow in width.

I do! The front brackets on my 27 Fordor fit pretty good with just a little bending involved. On the other hand the rear brackets are a major undertaking to bend to clear the Fordor body. I bolted mine to an extra Model T frame I had and bent them attached to that frame. It requires an additional 1.5" of clearance than the stock brackets will allow. If you need help you can email me. It can be done but it requires some work.

These photos are of the rear bumper on my ‘26 Fordor. I posted these photos several weeks ago in response to another question and someone posted that the bumper is a reproduction, but I don’t agree. Other than the red paint, the T Fordor has never been worked on has all the original bolts and nuts in place and is totally original. Even the top and upholstery are original and the body wood is very hard and solid. Jim Patrick

Lang’s warned me about the difficulty of fitting the rear bumper brackets to a Fordor. I’m thinking now I may buy just the bumper and make my own brackets.

I’ll probably go ahead and buy the entire front bumper kit from Lang’s.

Bill, I looked for several years and finally found some originals, thank's again Jeff H. They fit perfect, wait it out and you will find a set when this virus ends and swap meets start up again.

I'm not sure who you talked with but there was not much difficulty mounting the original rear or front brackets. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I put the front and rear brackets from Lang's on my 26 Tudor. The front brackets just needed a little grinding to have the clearance to mount in position. The rear was a different story. I had to dissemble the brackets cut a wedge in them to make the bend to to the frame holes. Welded the cut back up (using the piece I cut out) and then bolt the other attaching brackets back onto the main supports and frame.
