Late Motor Mount Bolt Spacer/Washers?

I seem to be missing some spacers on this late motor mount bolt between the spring retainer and the nut. For comparison on my 1922 Touring parts salad there is a big biscuit washer on the front bolt, the back bolt has a mish mash of two nuts. What spacers/washers is supposed to go on this motor mount? If it is the big biscuit washers where can I acquire it?

Unless you have the longer one, nothing. The nuts go on and cotter pins are installed. If the nuts bottom out before going all the way up and there is a big gap between the top of the nuts and were the cotter pin goes in, then you might need spacer washers between the bottom of the nuts and spring clamp. A good hardware store like ACE should have them.

How many leaves are in the spring, 7 or 8 leaves? For the 26/27 it should be 8 leaves. Do you have a spring pad on top of the springs? A 7 leaf spring instead of an 8, plus a missing spring pad would cause a gap, but I do not think it would be that much. here is a link to a thread on this topic about a month ago;

Do check the bolt holes to make certain there isn't "crud" in the holes keeping the bolts from tightening.

Do you have the leather or rubber pad between the top of the spring and the frame cross member? If not, that would take up some space, but the nuts must be tight and the square head bolt head in the hole in the center of the cross member. If you still need washers, you can use any kind of washers and stack them if necessary. Just be sure to place the cotter pins through the nuts and bolts.

TT? There are two of those. One for T car. And a bigger one , has longer threaded part for TT.

The parts book lists only nuts for the clip itself, no washers or spacers. But I would add any that are needed if the clip bar isn't tight without them. The book shows cap screws (bolts) and lock washers for the cap.

That motor mount is for a TT truck.

And I just happened to have another one and the bolts are noticeably shorter than the other.

Show the bolts with a ruler to make sure you have the correct bolts - there are other domed bolts - you never know what has been done to make things " fit"

Ignacio, what year is this for? I believe your car spring clip is pre-26.

Post a photos with the nuts off standing on the threaded part side by side. Right now with nuts half on/off or on it is hard to tell.

On the one to the left, you can see a small thredded hole below the front motor mount. The one to the right does not have that hole unless it is on the other side from the camera.
The correct mount for a 26-27 used that hole for a hole in the front splash apron which is mounted under the radiator.

The one on the right painted black does not have a hole. On second measurement the one on the right painted black is only slightly shorter bolt than the one on the left painted white. You can see in the picture the two mounts superimposed, placed face to face, the black painted mount bolt is only slightly shorter than the white painted mount. The frame is a 1926-27. The plan is to have a hybrid 1926-27 frame with a 1916 theme top part Speedster. All sentimental reasons, no other real rhyme or reason to it. It will have a 1916 ish brass radiator eventually. For stance and my understanding of these the front spring pack I loaded with 7 leaves. They are all painted and look really great now I would be reluctant to break apart the spring packs at this time. A new rubber spacer is in place between the front cross member and the spring pack.

So these just tended to have a lot of extra thread to accommodate various spring packs?

I'm pretty sure this spring has seven leaves. You can see some thread showing above the clip plate. I think I made the pad thicker than the original.

Maybe you would like an earlier spring clip to fit the 1916 theme.

In a word, no. There were/are 3 different versions of the Front Bearing and Spring Clip Assembly that you are showing. The one that you have all painted (white) and ready to go is the later/latest version (1926-1927) with the mounting boss for securing the front apron, and they would require an 8 leaf spring (but, this could possibly also be for a TT).

The other version of this was used for the TT Trucks. It looked exactly the same just with longer studs, using a 9 leaf spring it would need to have longer studs to facilitate this.

The one that you have that is black and yellow, would be the earliest of this version, the one that initially replaced the one that is shown in the second of the photos that Steve had posted (1920). It would have shorter studs to be used with a 7 leaf spring, and would have been used until the change to the 8 leaf front spring.

In short 3 different versions of the same part. They all look alike, but they are different.

Remember that the Y bracket clip must fit tight against the bottom of the main leaf spring, to hold spring tight into the crossmember. If you are going to use the Ford type front license plate mount it goes under the Y spring clip, this will use up a little of that extra thread. If you have more white paint I would use the black and yellow Y mount for the 7 leaf spring that you have.

I have 2 early style mounts as well. I am not sure how I ended up with so many motor mounts. The brackets look quite a bit more of a tight fit than the later mounts. I have 3 matching brackets and one mismatch pictured that's how they came to me. I wonder why the difference? One of the early mounts came with the hay wagon frame. So I guess that settles it I will do an early mount.

In your picture of early front mount, the third U bolt from left is for the rear spring to frame mounting.

Another difference. The U bolt on the left is slightly different and shorter than the U bolt on the right. I wonder why?

I also found yet another early motor mount in my stash of old parts! I have a total of 3 early motor mounts and 2 late. The 2 late's are apparently for TT. These things must multiply at night.

Ignatio, I would remove those two U bolts and check them against one another to see if that difference is in the U bolts themselves. They could be the same length and when you installed them, one side was done up more than the other and this will tilt the frame somewhat.

AllAn from down under.
