Hello fellow Model T-ers,

My "new to me" 1912 Warren Speedster has a Model A manifold and carburator. Would any of you have a suggestion on where I might find an air cleaner that would fit in these tight quarters?

A standard Model A air filter will probably fit. The originals were a wire mesh screen but you can buy them with a modern paper filter from most of the Model A part suppliers, such as Snyder or Macs.

Air filter or no air filter; with the carb inlet so close to the exhaust pipe, you've probably got no problem with super heated air in the carb.

Given closeness of exhaust pipe may need to eliminate foam filters -paper filters?

The Model A filter is not going to fit. Even if it did, the style shown, with the wire mesh would be ok, with paper not so good. The problem with filters that size on an A carb using the paper filter is they are too restrictive, not enough air so runs rich. If an air balance tube was in place on the carb which these carbs do not have (an air passage from the front of the carb to the bowl) it would work.
How about a photo of the setup from the side, might help with suggestions. If you are using a Model A intake and exhaust, something does not look right. Is there a offset piece between the intake and carb that is moving the carb more to the rear and down? If so and are just using under seat tank, think you are going to have to make some changes there and redo the throttle and needle controls if you want an air cleaner.

Are you intending on running on "dirt" roads ?

The way you have yours set up with the exhaust appearing to come down in front of the intake, this probably won’t work, but it is a good air filter for a normal Model T setup. It is spring loaded and braces against the hogshead. Jim Patrick

Just guessing these dimensions, The carburetor neck is 2-1/2" OD. the clearance between the neck and the exhaust is 2-3/4" and 1" from the engine block
The opening it needs to fit into is just 6".

Here's a foam one for a dirt bike from an eBay supplier on my Vaporizer.
I made a tubular adaptor which is a push fit, but there's a retaining wire over the top.
They come in many attachment tube diameters (35mm to 50 or even 60mm), and straight or angled.
This seems to run OK. I can't detect any change.

What is this filter?
I went via automotive places and all they have in this size are crankcase breathers.
I am thinking ATV dealer might have something closer.
I already measured that 1.25 sink drainage pipe fits into carburetor just fine. I think I will add oring for seal and have to figure out the clamp.

James: Where can I obtain an air filter assembly for a stock T like the one in the pictures above?

All you need to do is figure out how to hook up to the carb and make at point away from the exhaust and you can mount the filter elsewhere.

To everyone who asked where I got my air filter, I apologize for not answering back then. I got it at Snyder’s. Part number T-6207. $67.95. It only fits 1923-27 carbs with the short style choke arm. Jim Patrick

Auto Zone or other parts stores sell that same filter made by Spectre with a housing for $15.00 that can be adapted to the T using some plumbing fixtures.

There was another thread posted a several months ago with lots of great different pictures.

I don't know what your skill level is when it comes to fabricating is. Here is an idea, if you can find some tubing that fits snug on the carb cut a 45* as close as you can and have it still fit over the carb. turn it 180* and weld it to the 45* just cut. drill two holes and knotch to fit over the choke shaft. drill a 1/4" hole @ the top and weld a 1/4" nut to secure the tube to the carb. you can then cut the tube off long enough to clear the exhaust, or cut another 45* and turn the tube forward to get farther away. It should not be hard to find a motorcycle air filter to fit over the tube. I will try to attach

Was just thinking. Just a straight tube closed on one end T connection to carb. Up or down whatever works

I'll have to do a little digging to find the part number, but I use a K&N filter. I use a PVC plumbing piece I had to reduce the diameter a bit to slip into the carb. but it fits real nice, and the hogs head keeps it in place, as it is somewhat of a wedged in place fit. So far after several years use, the gasoline does not seemed to effect my PVC adapter. Off to Chickasha in the morning, will find the part number, and take a picture when I return

If you end up needing more room between your carburetor and exhaust pipe you could get a Model B exhaust manifold. They are sloped back like a Model T exhaust and you could move your exhaust pipe to Model A muffler connection back some. For more speedster fun you can get a Model B intake and carburetor for more speed.
