It's great to see the original sketch Rich. I don't know how you managed to "channel" my recollection of that old truck, the illustration is spot-on. It gives me great pleasure to be able to see your work on these boards. I think you may very well be the Peter Helck of our generation !

The description in your story was complete and intriguing. Finding some old pictures brought it together. Also, our minds have run down the same crooked little path for many years.
Thanks for the kind words.

Just thought I should add a piece to the "color" discussion.
Because part of the work I did for so many years involved color television, I was made aware of this significant difference. Mixing colors in the common sense, like mixing paint or yellow light through a blue lens is called "color additive" mixing. The reason a color tv uses a different mix is that the phosphors used on the screen that are "excited" by the cathode ray to display for a fraction of a second a tiny piece of the picture that collectively becomes the television picture, do not mix the way two paints or a light and a lens do. What they do is called "color subtractive" mixing.
Frankly, I do not understand it well enough myself to explain it. It was just something I needed to be aware of with my work. I know it exists, and I know what it was called.
I suspect that the yellow light through a blue lens may not be a true "color additive" mix, But I don't know about that. Color subtractive works similar for some colors, different for others. Again, I don't know enough about it. I sometimes wonder how the early engineers working to develop color television felt back in their day trying to make the thing work.

There's something very appealing about that '09 under six inches of new snow that makes me want to experience getting her started, and plowing through drifted roads, something I've never done. A couple of years ago when we had heavy snows in the valley, my Lizzie was laid up, undergoing an operation to correct the ravages of the "grey death" (aka babbit thrust washers). Snow drifted deep enough I couldn't have gotten out of the shop anyway ! We're pretty much ready for anything now. Oh boy ! Winter !! My favorite thing !!

Years ago there were dozens of these old bodies hiding in the vegetation of Idaho. Not having room to put them or an interest in all years we didn't attempt to retrieve many. Now most are gone and houses have sprung up where the old stuff was. Many were used for target practice or a source of sheet metal. This one survived on a friends ranch long enough for me to get a photo and paint from it.

I love this one !

We were mighty picky in the 60โ€™s, and at the time, I, for one, somehow thought the hulks would always be there, along with the Hoover wagons that provided a wealth of frames, wheels, running gear parts, and not infrequently, usable tires. Returning to the hunt for rust in the mid-70s I was shocked to find the wooden spokes had rotted out and horizontal-lying sheet metal was mostly all rusted through :o

Thanks Rich. Those were great days tromping through the sage brush and junkyards. "Memories!"

5 years ago I did this painting.
TTbyRaill.jpg
It brought some nice comments including a suggestion that the "trucks" (wheel carriages) were not correct for that era from David Dewey. David and I became great Forum friends and he helped me correct the painting. Discussions like that have kept it interesting in continuing to paint these old images.

It has been a while since I posted a Model T painting. I have been working on this one for the last week or two. It is nice when we can keep doing the things that we enjoy while the world around us struggles with the problems at hand. I hope most of you can find some normalcy these days.
StrawHattt.jpg
I posted a photo of this guy called "Proud of the old Fliver" on May 5th. Mom could tell me a great story about him if she were still here. The broken rear windows and the mud splatter tell me the car is just transportation and a few years old. I believe the license plate is Montana 1925. I had to improvise the right hand 20% to fit the image of the canvas. Fortunately there are lots of photos of Model Ts around.
I may fine tune some more detail or not. It is always hard to tell when they are done.
Best wishes to all and stay healthy.

Having a few places to show these makes them worth painting. I want to thank Jay (- In Northern California) for posting the photo back in November 2017. (http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/70 ... 1511131922) It has seemed like a good start for a project since then. He found so many great shots just like Dollisdad, Herb and others are doing now.
GsInfo.jpg
My Rusty Coupe replaced the '15 touring at the pump and I tried to compose the lighting. An earlier try is shown here.
While many of these are beyond my abilities, we don't learn unless we push our limits.
This one is on it's way for consideration in the Bulb Horn Magazine.
I'm happy to find some enjoying them.
Thanks

Hi David. I do have a Gallery of art and humor.
https://mtfca.com/phpBB3/app.php/gallery/album/7
I find it tedious to add all my paintings to it when they are already in 2 threads. "Just an old car Painting" and "Paintings that aren't Model Ts" have it all. I try to update them when I paint new ones so they aren't to far down the list. People use Martynn's for reference so it make more sense in his case. I doubt mine would be viewed near as much.
When folks have comments it seems easier here. I encouraged the moderators to add the comment capabilities on the gallery but few use that feature or even the galley itself.
Thanks for mentioning it though.

This is my Granddaughter 10 or so years ago sitting in the Tudor. I have never perused painting portraits as there is so much to learn to do anything successfully. I have friends who do marvelous paintings of people and they have spent thousands of hours learning. It's a struggle for me whenever I need to put some in a car painting. At least I understand the cars much better than humans. Requests for pet dogs and cats etc. are often asked for.

A few of you know this Fall had me struggling a bit. Finally it was discovered I needed a new aortic valve and they put in two stints. The valve went in nicely Dec. 22nd and I was able to go home the next day. It was totally much better than the long stay and recovery 11 years ago with the first replacement and 5 by-passes. I feel great and will be cranking cars as soon as the snow subsides.
I wasn't getting inspired with things to paint but this was shared by Tim Juhl. It's a Michigan farm family and their first car in 1917. He could tell you more.

Some time ago I shared a photo with Rich of my family taken in 1917 when they had bought their first car, a '17 Touring. My dad was only ten so his brother Harold (Jim) was at the wheel though I understand Dad got his chance when grandpa wasn't looking. Grandpa was 57 at the time and never learned to drive. The photo was taken in Michigan's Thumb, on the family farm which was located about 30 miles west of where I live now. I never expected Rich to turn it into a painting so you can imagine my surprise when I got an email in the new year with it attached and the subject "Happy New Year!" Seeing the old photo turned into such a beautiful painting did indeed start my year on a happy note and brought tears to my eyes in the process. Words cannot express my gratitude to Rich for such a gift.

Rich has had a tough go of late and many of us were worried for him. To hear that he is on the mend is the best news of all and I am humbled that he chose to paint my family in their T as part of his recovery. Like many of you, I enjoy his art and look forward to seeing many, many more. All the best Rich!

Thanks for mentioning that Thomas. I have noticed that folks often see things differently based on there memories and experiences. People can see images in the clouds or the grain of woodwork that remind them of things. I saw a spot in the kitchen drain that looked like an old friend of mine. Those who have old cars can enjoy the detail in these paintings much more than those who don't have that interest. That's why I put these out there for those who can find a happy place in them.
Like driving the cars, if they put a smile on someone else's face it goes beyond just our own pleasure in them.
Rich

P. S. It occurred to me that I believe the real Art would be to create the same feeling in a piece with fewer brush strokes and a lot less fiddling with the detail. Some of the greats could do that. Perhaps if I could paint a thousand more years and pay attention to what I was doing I could get closer to that.
This is good enough for now.
Always set your sights high.

Thanks Jerry. I only mentioned it in passing on a thread "Wanting to resume T activity" to encourage rehab activity. I may have mentioned becoming old and decrepit on other posts. My "repairs" seemed less serious than what many endure. I respect the thoughts and prayers given here on the forum and know how much they can help ones that are ill.
I didn't feel the need for myself.
Many of my posts can be considered off topic. We each have to weigh how important mentioning of health and deaths etc. is. It's good to keep up on our fellow members and I glad it is acceptable. I was able to stay in good spirts and just waited until I was felling better to mention it. Checking on the forum and painting each day I wasn't in the hospital or undergoing the dozens of tests made life seem better.
We all come to the Forum for our own reasons and probably can't imagine all the good that comes out of it in different ways.
Thanks to all who make so wonderful.

As far as the painting, I though this shows how the blotchy strokes give the impression of detail. I'm not an impressionist but small portions blown up make it look somewhat like that. Like a photograph, Higher resolution doesn't always make things look better.

I believe it was Tom R. who found and first posted the photo. The composition and detail were too enchanting to change a thing. I pretty much just copied it onto the canvas.

I am calling it a Model R. This was a lot of fun to work with even the dog which was a first for me. I would give credit to the photographer and ask permission if I knew more of it's origin. Instead I will simply ask for forgiveness.
It was too good not to try.

That is just perfect, Rich. A wonderful painting.

Thanks Rich. The youngster holding the crank seemed more like a boy in a dress. That was not unusual in those days. I thought the distress on the front tire might have been from chains. Many things come to mind when working with these images.

I thought I would wait a couple weeks for most to receive their July/August Vintage Ford magazine. If yours hasn't arrived yet don't look. :D

Getting a Model T stuck in the Mud is it's own reward. Most of us aren't in the mood to take a picture to remember it by. I enjoyed capturing such an event on canvas and having it accepted for a VF cover. It was less trouble than posing cars there for a photograph.
I am including it on this thread as a record of some of my work.
I believe flats of the cover are still available from MTFCA.
Enjoy.

The cold weather brought out the paint and canvas. I think Rich Bingham posted the photo I did this from. I lose track but like to mention where things come from.

I've pumped up enough tires to feel for this guy. He and the car have seen some miles.

I believe the photo was posted a time or two, here and there, and while I'd like to take credit for providing the inspiration, I don't remember for sure if I had posted it here. ("my, how that booze does fog yer mind !" - Kid Sheleen) But I love the image, and your painting even more !!

(wishing I had a good hand pump - lots of work, but ever reliable, and totally portable !!)

I'm a bit late to the party but I just had to say it's a beautiful painting, such rich detail with a touch of humor as well.

Thank you, Thank you! The colors of old things always fascinate me and trying to capture them is such fun. It's lucky we get to see so many charming photos here on the forum.
I tagged this one with Rich's name but don't have a good system for tracking them down. Most folks don't care where they came from, but some artists are very particular about using images that aren't their own. I do appreciate being able to work from some of the interesting ones.

I was looking for this photo earlier and just found it. It was a pumping contest of some kind on a tour long ago. Our son, with the bow tie, was standing in line to compete. The goal was to burst the inner tube.

Just another look back at pumping up tubes.

I saw some pictures taken at the Museum with my paintings in the background and realized I hadn't included any of them in this thread.
Here's one.
TRdstr.jpg
They were fun to do, and it's been long enough that I had forgotten them.
I tried to do them in a style of the Ford advertising illustrations but with subtle colors.

That is really fine ! It looks for all the world like a catalog plate. The barn vignette is a really nice touch !

Your painting is great! The colors are much better than that of digital pictures or the old photographic colors. Whether drawn from scratch or coloring in photographs it is truly an art. My art would look like a kindergartener's stick figures.
With the camera came a change in what they call "art" That is abstract. It is an attempt to do something that a camera can't do, but to me it is not art.
Neither is the "heavy metal" type music. I like the old bands from the 1950's or before. The type on old 78 RPM records. Our family used to play various musical instruments of the accoustical type. Piano's. Organs, Saxaphones Tubas, Violins etc. When all the aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents got together they would play their instruments and those who did not play would sing. I played the piano accordian. I liked Laurence Welk's TV program.
Art is kind of like that. The real thing is what counts and lasts. Yours will live on for many years.

This is from a sculpture painting at the Shady Maple smorgasbord in Pennsylvania Dutch country. I should have taken a full photo but I caught my favorite part at the time. Next time I get over there I'll grab a photo of the entire work.

It is one of many works by Abner and Aaron Zook who were Amish twins.

After posting this, I realized the top braces of the doors were out of perspective. I change the angles and darkened the doors some.
Much of the later part of a painting is correcting things that look wrong. There are always many, but I get to where it isn't going to get much better.
sbarnCsml.jpg
This is a photo and not a scan like the last one.
Perspective is always a challenge and the angle of the doors makes it tricky in composing.

In "fyne arte" painting I learned that mathematical or formulaic constructions are not your friend when confronted with a problem with perspective. If it looks right, it IS right. Your correction is comfortable.

I finally got back to Shady Maple. I hope these photos help show how 3 dimensional this piece is...
