Long pin drop into the slot to keep from over steering. That is the way they were made. If you look at the 3 pins on the shaft, one should be longer on the back side to drop into the slot.

It looks wore rather than machined. I will clean it up and try the gears

Remember to keep that arc slot on the TOP when you put the steering gearbox back in the steering tube.
The actual bearing for the steering shaft is the flat area just adjacent to the hole the steering shaft fits through. It is somewhat truncated due to the arc slot, but I have never seen very much wear at that point. There really isn't very much end load on the steering shaft.

Lightened up your photo. That case for the 5:1 gears seems ok. The image is at an angle, but the teeth seem good to go. Just clean out the old grease to check.

Plus rotated the picture to show how it should be in the column, driver view. The slot is up.

Here is comparison of the slot widths of the two types of cases.

Thanks for all the info guys
I will clean it up and start to reassemble. I’m waiting on a new shaft from Mark to get here. Old one could be welded up and turned down, which I may do as a later project. It’s chewed up pretty good near the bottom.
