When replacing thrust washers, do thrust plates go on either side of thrust washers or both towards pumpkin?

And steel thrust washers are kept from rotating by pins in the axle housings and on the differential cases.

Walter: If those pins are worn away or missing you need to install new ones before assembling the unit. The 'Axle Handbook" explains this. Without the pins holding the steel washers in place it's possible for the washers to ride on the axle shaft and wear a groove in the shaft. If this has already occured, I suggest replacing the axle out of safety concerns. Good luck.
