Ruckstell Left Hand Mount Shifter

Post by Harry Lillo » Fri Apr 02, 2021 8:17 pm

I have a Model T project underway and need a left hand shifter on the Ruckstell.
A couple of questions:
1) Does the kit the vendors sell completely replace the normal shifter that attaches to the back of the transmission?
2) Would it be possible to modify the left hand shifting kit to move the shift handle further outboard?
This shifter will be on Rosalie's brass firetruck and entry from the driver's side will be restricted by the ladders so an
outboard shifter will not be in the way. Moving it a further 6 inches from the emergency brake hole solves a couple of
issues in construction.
Thank you for your help,
Harry

When I installed the Ruckstell in our '22 I did not want the shift lever in the center of the car. I made my own shift lever, out of steel round stock, and mounted it on the extreme left of the provided shaft, to the outside of the pillow block bearing. I bent the dog legs into the shaft, using an acetylene torch. I did this so the shifter lever would not interfere with my left leg when using the clutch pedal.

When installed in the car, it looks like this:

Hi, Harry -- I have used the one from Snyder's in 2 or 3 cars and like it a lot. (I don't know whether Lang's is the same or not.) Yes, it does replace the entire center mechanism. I made the rod to the rear end from electrical conduit in one piece, rather than using a 2-piece one. Once you get things situated, you'll need to weld the arm to the shaft so it can't move. It doesn't take much.

In our RHD cars, the standard shifter is left handed anyway but it is still not much help because the throttle lever is also on the left of the steering quadrant. Rather than make up a RH shifter with all its complications, I added a foot throttle. Dead easy on a RHD car, but a little more complicated on a LHD.
