What have you done with your T Model in April ?
I put my 24 on my lift today and changed/replaced the front spring shackles and bushings. Found the right perch was easy to turn and tightened the nut at the wishbone close to half a turn !
Also had a lot of movement at the U-joint ball when applying the handbrake. So I put a shim in it and greased it good.
Replaced a couple oil caps and lubed everything.
The lift made easy work for most and helpful with alignment of the shackles. I found 2 nice, what appeared to be NOS shackles in my stash and bought 2 bushings from Snyder’s along with the shim.
A couple of the bushings just about fell out and a brass hammer put the new ones in nicely.
My front end is almost 100% now, hopefully the wind will die down tomorrow and I can test drive it !!

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
The LAST piece of my early Canadian '13 is now corrected out. FINALLY!!! The correct all brass Victor carbide generator. My car is basically a 1912 chassis with a 1913 body. John Brown model 19 lights and model 105 tail light, E&J cowl lights, and the Victor carbide generator. My 1912 running board has a very specific "3 hole" pattern with 6 5/16" distance between centers, that only ONE generator seemingly matches to. Three years of research including lengthy discussions with a couple of really hard core Ford experts, and leg work finally led me to which generator had this mounting hole pattern, and that is the very elusive Victor all brass model used from 1909-1912. One of the hardest, if not THE hardest one to find. The "Ford Times" of April 1913 shows a photo of a T with this generator on it. That's a really late date to sport last year's brass! My car was built in Sept. or Oct. 1912, and sold new in Nov. 1912 in Tavistock, Ontario, Canada. This car hasn’t travelled very far from where it was sold new, less than 20 miles from where we live. The only thing that is actually the 1913 model year is the radiator, windshield, and the body. Everything else is all 1912. “B” series engine, number 872. I have all the documentation of the car since new. My grandfather bought it off of the original owner in 1956. B&W photo is from 1929: original owner's daughter's wedding. Lot's of original details! Note the wrong later engine pan, and the lack of the locating dimple castings on the front top iron which I've corrected. This picture proves that at least in 1929, this car had a mis-match of lights. I'm pretty sure it's been like this all it's life. Why would anyone replace two cowl lights with two other all brass ones when the car was only 16 years old. No one would have cared then what brand or they looked like. Since it's a pre assembly line car, I think Ford used up all their old parts and my car was one of those.
1913 Canadian Touring & 1905 Queen, both cars are 4 generation family owned cars

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
When backing my tourer into my shed, the open left hand door was caught and sprung way back, breaking it away at the hinges and creasing the cowl panel. The insurance company paid me out for the claim value quoted, and I have been doing the repairs. The door pillar was left in place with just the hinge screws breaking out the timber on the face. Once the door and the trim were removed, the repair was nowhere near as complicated as it might have been. With Titebond no3 glue and clamps, the pillar is now one again, and I have some panel work and painting to do.

Been waiting for nice weather to do some cleanup around the farm. Fix a few things in the process. My UTV is different than most farmers and more fun.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
This is indirectly for my 1915 runabout or my 1923 touring. I haven't decided which. A friend sent me enough Edison 14 spark plugs to make a full set. I was going to send him some Splitdorf plugs in trade.
But they were not in great shape, and in the tester they sparked weakly or not at all. So refurbishing was the order of the day.
I derusted and wire brushed the bases and collars inside and out, cleaned rust and carbon off the insulators, reassembled the plugs, and gapped them.
I tested them under compression of 80 psi, much more than they will get in a Model T.
This time they tested OK, with a nice, strong blue spark.
The next step was treating the metal with gun bluing.

Finally I chased the top threads with an 8-32 die and put on the nuts. They're ready to go. I don't know what the difference is between a "775" and a 1. If there really is a difference, it's too subtle for me to see it.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
I’ve had this carbide generator for a while but kept telling myself i was going to paint it before putting it on. Out of sight out of mind, so I went ahead and put it on. Now that I have to look at it I’ll probably take it off and paint it and get my gas line ran. It will be nice to have it there when explaining to people how the lights work instead of describing something that’s fairly unbelievable to non-old car people. “Rocks that burn, just add water”

775 is the brand mark of high quality porcelain. Many mfg of plugs used it, so they are marked with ‘Quality’
1915 a major improvement in porcelain was “775” porcelain, by the Frenchtown Porcelain Co..Spark Plug Sketch
This new formula produced porcelain that would hold up to heat changes with less
absorption of oil. Since that time improvements have continued on porcelain designs.
Dr. Joseph Jeffery’s discovery of silimanite in 1933 gave spark plugs a longer life. This
was a major improvement in the porcelain design.

Checking the new starter for a new Bendix assembly. The old Starter bearing was shot causing considerable wear on the ring gear. New ring gearalso being installed during complete engine rebuild.

Doing some Spring cleaning, Coil point cleaning that is. Noticed coil firing consistency had degraded due to contact wear and carbon buildup.
Diamond hones are readily available on Amazon for around $10
Can't wait for the first drive with the newly rebuilt engine.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
My wife and I took the 15 runabout on a longer drive (for us) on a beautiful spring Kansas afternoon. Had to get gas first, which always takes longer with a T because people want to talk... With the top and windshield down going about 30 mph, it is always interesting how much more that you can see and smell. The smells varied from blooming lilacs to the smell of french fries from the golden arches.

Replaced the 27 touring my wife regretted selling and drove it home (about 90 miles total) over the weekend with high winds for most of the trip. I think she likes it and wont let anyone talk her out of it this time.

I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
Neil...you're a man after my own heart! I have always said to the point of being annoying (easily done for me!) telling everyone there's nothing, just nothing, like a good afternoon drive with the TOP DOWN!! After all, isn't that why the open car was really invented?? As I recall, initially the top was even an option? I love the blue sky, the birds, eagles (well, they're birds too), trees, you name it. I will admit, sometimes due to heat and strong July/August sun, it must go up. But now I have the torpedo, and it's top will be up most of the time with the back curtain rolled UP, for the sake of the wife, and the touring's top will probly never see the light of day anymore. And it's brand new! But, so is that nice, correct boot also! Just my thoughts.NealW wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 5:37 pmMy wife and I took the 15 runabout on a longer drive (for us) on a beautiful spring Kansas afternoon. Took the 1927 coupe frame in for sandblasting. Will send pics when is done. A question: Should I keep the front motor saddle from being blasted. I assume that would not be problem. Any comments?

They do come off. Need to check for crack under it anyway and so the area under it can be sand blasted too.

Built a polishing jig for my radiator shell, hope the new brassworks flat tube gets here by the end of the month. Also got the new kevlar bands installed and zip tied ready for the hogshead.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
Today was the first anniversary of finishing the restoration of our 15 runabout, so after lunch I took it out for a drive and to take a few photos. Our church recently completed a new timber framed sanctuary, and added this Aermotor windmill next to it. Notice that the color of the wood wheels match the windmill tower!
I am glad that I was able to find and restore a 1915 Kansas tag to go along with the car. I hope to retire in the coming year, and am getting the itch to do another frame up restoration of a brass T as a retirement project. I just need to find the right project.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
The one-year-old battery in my '27 ceased to function well. It tested bad so I purchased another. As I applied it's initial charge my battery charger said that the new battery was bad. I returned the new defective battery and installed another one. Finally I received a good battery. I'll hook up the cables and bolt it down today.

Just rebuild a generator.
It came here with a note: "Can you quick repair this it isn't working well".
It was an easy repair. Just changed everything.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
The light switch on the 25 had a dead short. One of the tabs on the contact ring was rubbing on the case when the lights were turned on, plus the whole switch is worn and loose anyway. Bent the contacts up, shortened the tabs and added a card stock ring around the inside. Seems to be working now. Next step will be full rebuild with new guts. Got the lights hooked up. Still need too pull the starter and check the starter switch. Then pull the body and replace the wood.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?g Wrecker
It's tag has it listed as a 490 D. From what I could find, the model is 490 and the D indicated that it came with a higher number of accessories
490
A. Just the wrecker
B. PTO drive
C. Bed sides and PTO
D. Land anchors and steering clamp, bed sides, and PTO.
(I have all of those pieces still)
An article showed an E level. I think it came with the tuck away lift system.

Interesting. Thanks for that. I haven’t seen a 490, but it looks like the Traffic King.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
Got our 21 touring up and running for the driving season. A little later than normal, as we've been enjoying driving our 15 runabout instead. I don't have to put the top down on that car to get it out of the garage, plus it is easier to put up or down the top by yourself with it versus the two man top on the touring.
It was very windy drive, even for Kansas standards, today. I work as an aerodynamicist at Cessna, and the term "flat plate drag area" is used to describe the drag of an airplane. There is no doubt that a T has a lot of flat plate drag area, especially with a flat plate windshield! Going 30 mph into a 20 mph wind today had 25 times the drag compared to going downwind. The throttle was not much past idle setting for that stretch of the drive. The drawback is that there's not as much airflow going through the radiator then.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
The wife and I took the 26 for icecream tonight after supper. 83 degrees out, last week it was snowing. On our way to the icecream shop, the fire pager went off for a gas leak. We were only 2 miles from the address. Yup the assistant chief was 1st on scene in his 26 pickup! Lucky it happened to be an Amish residence and they were impressed at the speed in which I arrived. The gas company pulled in behind me and was laughing and taking photos of the assistant chiefs response vehicle. I said "dont laugh I beat you!"

Took my 44 year old Harley for a spin today also.

Dallas, I think you need to trade that 26 for Tim's fire truck. Then you can arrive in the appropriate vehicle.

Realized I’ve gotten to old to bull heavy objects. A couple of 2x4s and my chain come along made replacing my freshened hogshead much easier. Also purchased a decent Y.O.M. plate.

Re: What have you done with your T Model in April ?
Spent the rainy Wednesday in the shop with my hogshead.
One of the mag post screw holes was stripped, so Monday I took the hogshead to a welding shop and had the hole filled.
I've never done any aluminum welding, and I didn't want learn on this and risk screwing it up, so it was well worth the $5 to have it done.
Grind down the blob.
File it flat.
Ready for precision machine work.

Drill the new hole.
Tap it.
The 10-32 screw fits. Sure glad I took that machine shop class.
Home made spring compressor.

Started up the '18s completed chassis yesterday. After priming with the choke 3 times, it started on the second crank. A yard drive next week. Once my brother is finished with the race car, will use the two post lift for the body installation.

No, of course not. There always has to be a senior moment to make me do a job over. Why in the heck did I take wire off in the first place? Beats me. Well anyway, thanks for mentioning it. Better to find out now than have to pull the engine out of the car again.

Done paid for and got my new Brassworks flat tube today, nice improvement over the old original round tube. Now to get it in and break-in the kevlar bands.
