26 Roadster Steering column
On the 26/27 coupe, roadster, touring, and tudor, which side of the firewall should the steering column flange mount ? I've looked over quite a few pics on the net and it seems both ways are quite common. I believe on the pre 26 models they all mounted to the inside (passenger side) of the firewall.
I'm thinking the 26/27 also mounts on the inside. As a side note, I've found earlier threads showing two styles of the bottom bracket. They are mounted on the outside (engine side) of the firewall.
Thanks, Bill

Correct, column on the inside bracket on the outside.

Flange is on the inside. 26/27 flange is round.

Re: 26 Roadster Steering column
On our Canadian sourced cars, the 26-7 flange is square. It is an east way to distinguish them from earlier columns, especially when looking for a set of 5:1 components.

I agree with Allan. I think square flange is correct for the 1926-27 roadsters. At least it is on mine. Flange on the inside and brackets on the engine side of the firewall.

Re: 26 Roadster Steering column
Bill, 26-27 steering column flange is square, mounts to the inside of the firewall. The spacer bracket mounts on the outside of the firewall. There is also a picture in the Ford Service Manual Fig 563, not very clear in the new reprint manuals but does show up clearly in the original hard cover manual.

Re: 26 Roadster Steering column
And...two styles of the steering gear to dash covers for '26-'27, the Fordor is unique.
The steering column mounts inside. The dash cover mounts outside the dash/firewall, that way the 2 upper holes in the steering column square flange line-up to the dash cover, that provides the lower 2 holes for the steering column square flange. And the dash cover lower edge holds the floorboard.

Re: 26 Roadster Steering column
Thank you for the help and quick response!! I changed out the original one because it was loose where the gear case is pinned to the column. When I'd turn the steering wheel the gear case would rotate opposite a half inch.
I had the replacement one on the inside, but saw markings on it indicating it was mounted previously on the outside... so I changed it. Guess I'm moving it back to the inside today where it should be. My friend told me Any job worth doing is usually done twice!!
....sometimes more!!

Re: 26 Roadster Steering column
Mine is square and I just finished installing it for the third time
I had mine on the outside and things didn’t go right with the bracket on the lower two holes. So I pull it out and get it all in there nice and pretty like. I was proud of myself until I tried to bolt the dash in place. What was in my way but the steering column. I am good at it now if you need a hand.

Re: 26 Roadster Steering column
I am missing the bracket that supports the column to the dash. I didn’t see anything the vendors offer for this. Is this a bracket I need to beg for here on the forum? Mine is 26/27 also

Re: 26 Roadster Steering column
I have one if their out of stock https://www.modeltford.com/item/3500D.aspx
This steel brackets mounts onto the steel dash panel, just below the steering column and helps to support it.
It is a reproduction of the original bracket which is so hard to find and often missing.
Fits all 1926-1927 car bodies.
