Model T/Model A Song 1928

Post by 1194668jc » Thu Apr 08, 2021 11:17 am

I'm just a 17 year-old kid who repairs antiques, listens to early "jass," and wants a "T." All of these attributes made me want to repair an old gramophone, pick up some '10s and '20s jass/jazz records, and fall in love with one of the records, "Henry's Made a Lady Out of Lizzie."

I have it on a Player piano roll. Great song. I have another roll with verse that goes I bought a new Ford car and was prouder far than the owner of a Stutz. But it fell away the very next day, the squirrels ate the nuts.

You can see some of my automobile-related 78 rpm records in this thread including the same Harry Reser Cliquot Club Eskimos version of "Henry's Made a Lady out of Lizzie" that you posted:

I also have at least one other recording of that same song performed by a different band on another record label. My dad collects automobile song sheet music and he has the sheet music for the song.

I also have some wind-up disc phonographs, including Victrolas, but I play most of my 78 rpm records on modern equipment - a Dual turntable with a Sure cartridge and a three-mil diamond stylus.

I've been a collector of 78 rpm records since I was a kid. I buy them at estate sales - it's a cheap hobby. After I acquire a record, I clean it with soap and water and a horse-hair brush. The problem is, I acquire them faster than I clean and ultimately play them.

I have that record and others of the era. One I have is In the Back Seat of the Henry Ford. When I was a boy, our family had a mountain cabin where you walk in one mile. No electricity just an old Victor Talking machine. We had many records. I brought all the records home when the cabin was sold. I later built a crystal set radio and although the cabin was in the mountains north of Pasadena Ca. It was situated so that I could get Salt Lake City radio station at night. Here is a picture of my old Victor. One thing I remember was when I was about 8 years old our family and a few other relatives were at that cabin. I found a record of the Star Spangled Banner and when I played it, all the adults stood up with their hand over their heart. So like a little brat, I kept playing it over. Finally, they told me to stop playing it and play something else!

I hope you can see the above 2 albums. The first shows my collection of car song 78s and the second my car song sheet music. I just love these old songs. I would really like to know what song the ' Stutz-nuts' rhyme comes from. Sometime when time allows, I hope to get audio files of everything I have online. As well as the records in my possession I have snagged quite a bit from the internet.

I have the sheet music to that song, and many others too. I hardly ever play them though.

I've always liked this song made popular by Whispering Jack Smith. The Model T isn't mentioned until it pops up at the end of the song as the punch line.
