27 early Russell cars, today there are none in Winnipeg . This is Winnipeg 1912 the cars you can see all have 1912 plates black with white crest and numbers this was a cab service

Great picture. When you consider that they only made about 200 cars per year, that's quite a selection to end up in Winnipeg. They appear to be 1911 and 1912 models. The ones with the crank in the "up" position are 1912.

Charlie, I believe the closest car (far left) is a 1911 Model 22.

well only one picture posted , so here's the other

I probably own one of the cars from that line up. It is a 1912 Torpedo roadster. Model R engine (286 cu in). Allegedly bought new by some Winnipeg lawyer. One of 4 Russels i own. Used to have 5, but pfindlay bought one last year!! All good

Harold, there seem to be no remaining examples of large early Russell engines so anything is possible, but I doubt it for these reasons:

1. if it is a 50 hp engine, Russell did not make them until 1908. (They made a 40hp in 1907)
2. The only early Russell 4 cyl engines I've seen (not Knight) have the Russell logo cast right into the valve cover as seen in the picture below. The picture shows a 1910, but I've seen a 1908/9 24hp Russell 4 cyl engine and it has the same Russell casting.
3. The 1908/9 and 1910 Russell engines I've seen have the intake and exhaust manifolds on the right side of the engine, unlike yours. (Although the valves appear to be on the left? Not too efficient.)

However, it's possible that the early 50hp engines were different. If you have an engine number that may help. It should probably be in the 300 - 1000 range if it is a 1908/9.
I'd be interested to hear if you find any more information about your engine.

A correction to my previous post - those covers on the left side of the block must be inspection covers. I can see the valve ports on the right side of the engine.
