26 or 27?

Post by NY John T » Wed May 12, 2021 10:30 am

I know this was discussed recently, but I just have to ask. My newly purchased (barn find) Tudor was registered as a 27 in New York state. It's been is the same family since new. Last night I finally uncovered the frame serial number which is 14418538. The serial number chart shows it was made in October 26. Would this have been sold as a 27, since the newer models came out in the fall of the previous year? Should I try to change the registration at the DMV to 1926 or just leave it as a 27? BTW I already bought vintage 27 license plates. Engine is from a 23. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would not mess with the title/registration. Especially since the engine and frame don't match (assumption)..Can of Worms..

If the number on your frame matches your title, I wouldn't mess with it. It's been good enough for 94 years.

The 1927 model year started in August 1926. So you have a 1927. No different than today. New models introduced in the Fall of the prior year.

In answer to your question, the chassis number is what you go by, and according to that and the serial number list indicating when the number was registered at the factory, it is a 1926, however, if it is a restoration consisting of parts from wherever they could be found, the body may not go to that chassis. The 1926-‘27 year models are identical. Those years were completely redesigned and are referred to as the improved Models. If your front fenders look like the attached pictures, it is a 1926 (or 1927). If you have the older flat fenders, God only knows what year it is. I agree with the others though. Be happy you have a title and leave it alone. It is close enough. Jim Patrick

Thank you so much folks. That's what I wanted to hear. The body is purely 26-27. Only the engine's been changed. It lived in a warehouse/shop for many years gathering dust. Lots of critters and birds called it home. It's complete though. Even has dual batteries; six volt and 12 volt. I guess they wanted the starter to run off 12. Lots of frayed wiring. YEARS of oil all over the engine compartment.
I'll keep it as a 27. NYS registration shows the engine number as the VIN number. It was much easier to do it that way instead of looking for the frame number under the floorboards!

There are differences between 26-7's. Most are minor. brake backing plates, D/S tube, carburation. Most note worthy are the headlights. 26.Fender mounted. Then a stiffener bar mounted between the fenders, under the headlights. then, 27 headlights mounted directly on that stiffener bar. Inboard of fenders. That bar was a stamped steel piece with a U cross section. Then changed to a round bar. McCally breaks down the differences better than I can. My roadster P.U. is a 1927.

Lost my posting. I wanted to note that one can call their T anything they want to call it, for it does not change what the T actually is. A 1910 T is a 1910 Model from August 1909 to August 1910. I always said "the item speaks for itself". Call an item what you may, it does not change it. I know people want to predate the model year for some reason. Does a 1910 become more desirable when you call it a 1909?

As John Saylor observed, October 1926 is in the 1927 model year. Your T is a 1927. Some people confuse calendar year with model year. Your T is fine. No need to change a thing.

My car is registered as a 26. That’s how Missourah did it back then car is an October 26 build and has all 27 features. Missouri was responsible for vin numbers back then and the state would register year of build instead of model year. I’m leaving it
