Embarking upon a rear axle assembly rebuild and this pinion gear is on here tight enough to give the cheapo harbor freight puller fits. Not wanting to ruin anything and being ready to man up for the right tool for the job, what gear puller would you recommend for this particular application? Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Some threads on the removal of the pinion gear and pinion bearing (the harder of the two)
Gear removal
Jelf Method
Take off the nut, turn it around, and put it back on just far enough to be even with the end of the shaft. There should be a little space between the nut and the gear. Then do this:

Loosen the nut a bit and grab a large brass drift and a hand sledge & give the back of the gear a couple good whacks with OR a large brass hammer (2 lb.) works good !

Neat trick, I will use it when the drift & hammer method is not enough. I have picked up some neat tricks here.

TRD, thank you for the information! Dad looked it over and did the 'Jelf' method yesterday. Two strikes and it came right off! I appreciate Steve's common sense approach to things. You do not always need fancy tools, just common sense and mechanical advantage clearly can win the day.

In the worst case scenario, A cheap hydraulic press lifted with an engine hoist works great on the stubborn ones.
