Latest NH carburetor project

Post by Scott_Conger » Tue Jul 27, 2021 4:58 pm

This provides a 110% increase in flow area over a standard commercial float valve, and an 16% greater increase in flow area over a factory Holley float valve. Additionally, it cannot stick closed if a bad batch of fuel is purchased, or if some varnish tries to stick it shut.

All modern technology and unprecedented flow, packed into an NH. I expect this to work very well for one of my projects.

There's always something interesting going on in the shop...

What kind of performance enhancement are you expecting?

I'm expecting to climb steep hills with 4 gallons of gas rather than 9; to never run hot, lean or surge at high speeds due to fuel starvation, and absolutely eliminate the very rare occurence of a contaminated needle sticking shut and shutting the engine off.

I make a valve already, which accomplishes the fuel/performance enhancements listed above, but this version opens up the through-put even more, and adds the added feature of mechanically pulling the valve open rather than relying on gravity to do it. Stuck needles most often occur after a lengthy downtime (winter) and crap gasoline glues things together. Sometimes they can be broken loose by hitting the carb with a plastic-faced hammer to jar things loose, but the needle still requires gravity to provide the "oomph" to open, and the needle isn't nearly as heavy as a bowling ball, so is sometimes reluctant to release. With this valve, the mechanical advantage of the weight of the float pulling down on the valve should provide an irresistible force that the valve cannot resist.

Every valve available from dealers has a restriction built-in because of too small of a hole through it...in fact, due to faulty design, the area is roughly 50% the area of the Holley original. People fool with fuel pumps, larger fuel lines (which is ironic, as they're still trying to squeeze the fuel through the same small hole). They are all convinced that they are suffering from vapor lock or some such malady. Nothing could be further from the truth, and it is borne out in that after stalling out on a hill or during a particularly fast run, the car will immediately restart after just a minute of sitting. Nothing cooled off...the bowl simply refilled. Getting fuel from the tank into the NH is like trying to drain an olympic swimming pool using a firehose with a spray-nozzle the size of a hypodermic needle. The big hose makes sense, but it's still just a plan that wasn't well thought out.

This isn't an ad for any part...Just an example of what is coming out of the shop this week, for interest's sake. I believe it would be a very small subset of T owners interested in this, so there is presently no plan to market it.

Most small engine carburetors that I ever worked on had a small spring that would I have the float help pull the needle down. Just curious after you drill the hole in the seat bigger how do you polish the edge so that the needle seats good

Jerry

the hole is not simply drilled larger; the body is an entirely custom fabrication from raw stock. As to the treatment of the hole for sealing, there are several steps involved to ensure a good and consistent seal.

That seems like a very worthwhile improvement that just about anybody would want.

Count me in. :!:

Great little solution to a common problem, well executed !
