I need a measurement favor....

Post by George Andreasen » Mon Mar 18, 2019 5:01 pm

Could I get someone to measure the thickness of a standard crankshaft flange for me? I have a growing suspicion that mine was faced off to true it up and a bit too much was removed, causing my drum/band alignment problem. Thanks!

George, measuring in about 1/2" from the edge.
6 different cranks were.280"-.300", .290" on more than one.

Thanks Dave. Assuming my crank will measure on the low side, facing it would have removed even more material and would account for my line up problems. Really appreciate the effort and information!

No problem, George. ;)

The way I understand it is, your drums are forward about 1/4"... the flange is only slightly thicker than .250" , seems that can only be a small part of the misalignment.
Keep us posted. :)

George, I have been pondering on your original problem and that IS a worry! The transmission drum set is first assembled and the driven gear pressed on to .010" clearance. This whole assembly, with the triple gears, is then dropped onto the transmission shaft. Then the clutch drum and 3 spacer washers are fitted, making another fixed unit with the flywheel. With the fitting of the clutch plate pack and the clutch driven plate, you make another fixed unit. This whole unit is then fitted up to the crankshaft, in your case some .012"'further forward. The only thing altered should be the clearance to the magneto coilplate. The truing of the crankshaft flange should be inconsequential.

Per Ford Drawing the rear crankshaft flange is .316/.320 then finished ground to .3125 give or take. This should give you a starting point. J
