Car Games ideas and discussion...

Car Games are on the menu at the VTAA's Summer Tour two weeks from now. We have a couple good ones in mind, but it would be fun to hear others' experiences and get a conversation going to share ideas. There are a couple older AACA forum threads on this topic https://forums.aaca.org/topic/64413-kno ... ent-261087 and https://forums.aaca.org/topic/232385-lo ... nt-1214316, the MAFCA publishes a downloadable 35-page book https://www.mafca.com/downloads/Publica ... 202011.pdf, and searching "MTFCA:car games" finds a few threads on this forum.

The Vintage Touring Association of Alberta is all about touring in pre-1932 original cars... we formed in 2019 and planned three events for 2020; these were updated for 2021 and our inaugural tour was out of Sundre, AB in June with 24 cars 1911 to 1931.

We had a pretty fun Blindfold Driving competition at a small-town museum during that tour: Drivers were blindfolded with a fresh Covid mask, and endeavoured to drive exactly 91' and place their bumper over a red frisbee. Drivers had an independent spotter who could only instruct bear right, bear left or Stop! (safety hazard or long overshoot). The course was two lanes wide and probably 150' long. Most drivers stopped well short, although the top three finishers all came within 8' of the mark. The winner received a recycled "attendance" trophy topped by a pair of sunglasses with blacked-out lenses. There was pretty good take-up on the event — of the 24 cars, 20 participated with a total of 24 drivers.

I've posted much the same info and request on the AACA General forum earlier today, BUT didn't ask who recognizes the famous person in the photos below...

Who else has car game stories and ideas?

Potato stab. Passenger must stab & get 1 potato from each of 6 stations into the car from a dowel with a nail in the end like for picking trash. 1 cheek must be on the seat at all times. front or back seat. Timed event. points for each potato & fastest to slowest time. Penalty for running over a spud and/or missing a spud at any station. Coarse can be made more difficult by adding a backup station or 2.

A variation above with popping 1/2 inflated balloons.

Brooming a beach ball thru a course.

The paper bag over the head driving a course. Risky to marital bliss with the spouse giving instructions. The cat fight is part of the fun. Need a very large parking lot.

Insurance company's dont cover gymkana's. Liability wavers are a good idea.

I remember as a kid, they strung hot dogs on a string and the wives set in back while the husband would drive under and the girls would bite the hot dogs off the string. Can’t remember if they were blindfolded.
Probably be somebody offended nowadays somehow.

Poker runs can be a hit. Pick a card at the stops, best hands win something.

Borrowed from OCF.
The shoe race. A passenger takes off one shoe and leaves it at the start. Halfway down a straight course the passenger hops out, runs back to the start and puts on the shoe and then runs back to and hops into the car. You then race to the finish line.

The fire drill. Similar to above but everyone exits the car at the halfway point, runs around it and then back into the car.

The balloon pop. Another variation on above. A new balloon is popped using a part of the car by a passenger at the halfway point. The balloon can either be preinflated or the passenger has to first blow it up.

I saw the water race in the threads you posted. A variation is to use a quarter of a roofing shingle or wooden shim with a small paper cup filled with water. The passenger holds it out the window while you race to the finish line.

Balance on a single axle trailer
Was just going to mention this! It's an old tractor game usually played with steam engines. Great fun to watch. Definitely wasn't done on a single axle trailer!

A couple of simple ones:

garage parking.
Setting up cones in a 'tight fit' garage size and making competitors reverse in so that they 'almost but not quite' touch the rear cones. Closest to the 'wall' wins - points deducted by cones touched or knocked over.

wheel diameter
Start on a line. Judge marks tyre (tire) where it is sitting on the ground, then drive forward one tyre (tire) revolution. Points off depending how far short or past the mark is to the ground when they stop (only one revolution though).

Front axle loading
If a commercial vehicle scale can be located (local Mountie road unit perhaps?). Competitor pulls front axle on the scale and must estimate the weight - closet to 'actual' in % terms wins.

SCMTFC used to do these all the time. Some one has a teeter totter made from 4"x 8" beems tapered on the ends & bolted to a 3" pipe in the middle and angle on the ends. You where timed bye how long you could balance with out the ends touching once you got it balanced. Very few could balance it. We did the potato stab with the potatos in old model T tires. Also put a plumb on the crank and you had to stop on a target on the ground. We had a obsticle coarse that required both of the people to drive. One of the obsticles was changing a wire wheel on a stand, one partisapent had to take it off and the other had to put it back on. Once there was a parent that was a scout leader and we where able to barrow a Pine wood derby track and race pine wood derby cars with the kids. This involved constructing the cars with the Grandkids & kids before hand. Super fun time with the kids. We did a blind fold race that involved backing & pulling into two differant parking places in the parking lot ( they where diagonal and opposite of each other) did much better with the grandson than the wife giving directions. We had 2 golf balls with aroap between you had to throw and get to wrap around a PVC ladder. Throw hulahoops over trafic cones the passanger did this seated. And a Bar-B-Q of coarse.
Craig.

Anyone concerned about offending someone these days should probably not leave the house. My problem is that I am offended by people who are easily offended.... :D

... So bored with all this trendy "taking offense". The very word "offense" is offensive. It hisses like an adder. Back in the day, we were somewhat more civilized. We took umbrage ... ah, umbrage... rich and woody, nothing hissy about it!

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions. Much appreciated.

So, nobody recognized the Model T VIP in one of the photos?

Yes, our illustrious site admin and director Chris Brancaccio in the ‘23 touring.

Chris rolled to a stop 29’ short of the red frisbee, a hair better than the overall average of 30’.

Many years ago, our Carbon Canyon Club did a blind folded driving test at the edge of a lake up to a laid out garden hose about 40 feet away - the only spectator directions that could be yelled to the driver was "left or right" to keep out of the water - one of our Charter members who had already "enjoyed" himself with adult beverages proceeded to take his turn - soon after donning the blindfold, several of us snuck up from behind and as soon as he engaged low pedal, we lightly picked up the rear of the pick-up as that was the vehicle everyone used for the challenge - we let Larry throttle up a bit in low as we bounced the T up & down a bit - after he got off the throttle and figured he was close to the hose we lowered the rear ever so gently - he pulls off his blind fold an to his amazement he had only gone about 4 feet as we were all rolling on the ground laughing - wish someone would have video taped it - he had the darndest look on his face !!!

Potato stabbing has been a staple for our PreWar car club up here. Lots of laughs watching each other take turns driving and stabbing.

Best done with the open cars. Leaning out the winder of the closed cars can be a long reach.

Fortunately so far, no stabbed tires either.

Water balloon busting with either a tire or the stabber goes well with the challenge too. Not sure if the link will work or not, a couple of our members trying for potatoes in a 1913 McLaughlin.

Of course there is the relay where you have a team of 2 cars holding a basketball between them with a plunger

We have always done it in an asphalt parking lot. More skill is required to hook that potato as its dancing away from the spike.

How about a T driving skill event (time - penalties) This YouTube course is complex but its the idea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bK36RQxl0F0
Another
Golf Ball Scooping (could be eggs -some hard and soft boiled) - numerous golf balls scattered around a field - passenger scoops up as many balls as they can in a given time period but must keep a check on the car somewhere - entrants can design their own scooper in advance (no rules limiting design  ) - touching the ground with any body part results in disqualification

Thanks to all for the latest round of comments.

Chad, about this toilet-plunger relay... I can picture the cars driving in parallel with the basket ball between them and I like the notion, but how does this become a relay and what specifically is the competition?

A wire loop attached to a block of wood or something. You have to spear the loop with your dangling crank.... speed and size of loop determine the level of challenge.

Geez! Visualizing it I bet that could get you in trouble too!
