I don't think the SG would hurt anything. It won't remove rust and scale, but it will cut grease and help loose rust and scale move. It might cause the system to leak, if dirt is plugging small leaks. If you add any chemicals to the system, be sure to completey drain and flush it afterward. Removing the radiator hoses and using a garden hose to flush the block and radiator can be helpful. Avoid flooding the timer and front crankshaft pulley area with water.

You can lower the radiator fluid & look past the baffle @ the tops of the tubes. Looking @ build up & rust flakes causing obstruction. May need a removal & reverse flush with a garden hose..
Visualize the situation. Pulling the upper hose/outlet will give a sense of the rust chunks in the system. Thats a gathering point. A shop vac will suck the junk out. All this will give you a handle on the problem & the ability to make an informed decision on the corrective action.
A 1/2 to full litre of coke will do an effective & cheap cleaning with fresh, clean water.(phosphoric acid) Cheap & simple first.

Drive it, get it hot. Much more effective hot.
A fellow club member had over heating issues on a long tour. 2 cans of coke, run all day. Next morning, flushed. No more issues.
Your results may vary.

I have not read all the post about your overheating problem.
That said, I have one or two questions.
Have you removed the head?
If so, did you put the head gasket on right way?
Good luck, Dan.
