What do you wear to a wedding?
If you are driving for the bride and groom, what do you wear? Probably can be informal. It is an Indian wedding I have been asked to transport the groom, but I am sure others will want pics.

A clean pair of bibs and a bowler hat. If it's not too formal, delete the hat.

Re: What do you wear to a wedding?
Lots of weddings are done here at the Castle in Charlevoix Michigan, including Indian weddings. A traditional Indian wedding is very formal. Arriving at the wedding is a really big deal, the bride is often transported on a white horse. Driver for the groom should be in a suit and tie. If in doubt ask the bride or groom in advance.

George!
I think they are going to have an Indian wedding as in the people from India. Modern language usage would call the others "Native American" or "Indigeous" American.

Re: What do you wear to a wedding?
As stated, is it a Native American or people from India.
Either way a little dress up of the automobile should be in order. Your role is a chauffeur, so you should look the part but remember the pictures will be of the Groom and auto and then maybe you.
If Native American or people from India. If Large wedding with many people from India

Re: What do you wear to a wedding?
I check with the bride. Some don’t care as long as you look nice, but there are bridezillas that have a very specific look they’re going for with every aspect of the day. I have a lightweight three-piece suit that easily dresses up or down. Just remember, you never want to look better than the bride and groom.

Re: What do you wear to a wedding?
My last driving the bride experience (literally & forever) had me dressed in black slacks and black shirt. It also ended with my bel air's water pump failing and me limping back home. Never again. Even with well maintained cars the $$ you get from the bride and groom does little to compensate for the potential stress of a mechanical failure on THEIR special day. Never again for me.
I know you're doing it, which is cool but I highly recommend you let them know that they will be riding in a close to 100 year old car and you have no ability to control unexpected mechanical failures.

Re: What do you wear to a wedding?
Indian = someone from India
Native American = someone from US
Jewish person is never a Jew, always Jewish
The groom stopped by and said I do not have to be formal. So no suit.
And I get to stay for the food - YUM. I also offered to give anyone a ride including the bride. It is our secret. Tradition is the groom comes to the wedding in something special. Bride is waiting for him.

Re: What do you wear to a wedding?
1. Indian is also used in the American sense by members of American Indian organizations (e.g. National Congress of American Indians, Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs, American Indian College Fund, etc. - google it). It's mostly politically-correct Caucasians who think it's some kind of egregious etiquette error.
2. Correct. I was born in North Carolina, which makes me a native American.
3. See #1. Politically-correct Gentiles have decided that "Jew" is somehow insulting. It's not (at least not if you're a Jew). I am a Gentile, but learned to read and write Yiddish when I was in the Air Force in the 1960s (had a letter in Yiddish published on the front page of the Jewish Daily Forward). I am currently a member of a Yiddish club that meets weekly on Zoom. I offer this song, written and sung by a Jew, as evidence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wro6XheRBi4
So, in summary, Indians call themselves Indians, Jews call themselves Jews, and Caucasians fret a lot about offending someone and, God forbid!, using the wrong pronoun.

Re: What do you wear to a wedding?
As far as what to wear as chauffeur, I can't help. I have been to one Indian wedding in my life. It was a couple of years ago and the groom was my youngest son. The bride's parents immigrated to the US in the early 1970s from India and settled in Baltimore, which is where the wedding was held. The ceremony and the reception following were all held in the same building, so no chauffeuring involved. My family and I were all dressed appropriately. One thing I remember was at the reception, that I could never join the end of the line for either the bar or later the food, because other guests kept shoving me to the head of the line.
This is what we looked like after the wedding and before the reception started. My son is the tall one in the center and his bride is next to him (yes, she's a foot shorter). At the left of the picture are the bride's parents, then her brother and his family. To the right of my son in the picture are my girlfriend and I, my daughter and her husband with their twins in front of them, and then my other son.

David-
I ordered a Star Wars "Imperial Officers" costume in black from a cosplay place and added buttons. I bought a chauffeur cap from a party store and a pair of black boots from a cheap shoes outlet. I have tiny feet, so they are ladies' boots! A pair of gauntlets finishes off the outfit.
I took in the jodhpurs a bit so they weren't quite so poofy.

Dick
It is some Jewish friends I have that told me Jew was insulting to them. I should call them Jewish or of the Jewish faith.
If I say Native American you know I mean American Indian.
Has nothing to do with being politically correct.
Apparently it is tradition that the groom arrives at the wedding in some way. The bride is already there. The groom works at a Ford dealer and only he and I know how he will arrive. It will be kept a secret.
The groom said I do not need to dress up in a suit, so I think I will just wear black pants, a white shirt, and a bow tie. I think that is enough to be respectful for the bride and groom. I will also gives rides to anyone that would like one, and I am sure they will take pictures, so I want to look good for the pictures. Now if only I could grow some hair on my head.....

This weekend we attended a 20’s themed wedding. My wife and kids knocked it out of the part, me in typical fashion, faked it! Our T was one of three that made an appearance.

Re: What do you wear to a wedding?
Dave, in the case of my son's wedding, there were no arrivals. The wedding was held in the building of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Maryland (not because of any Masonic connection, but because it's a magnificent and popular venue for elegant events). Everyone was there before things got underway. The guests were all upstairs. My son went up the wide staircase with a drummer and the rest of our family. Once we were in the large room where the ceremony was going to take place, a special hat was put on my son's head. The bride was then carried in on a sort of platform by her brother and his friends. She then stood up and was more or less blindfolded, led to where my son was, and guided to circle him seven times while the priest discussed the significance of the number seven. She was then allowed to look at him. Most of the ceremony was in either Sanskrit, Bengali, or both. The priest added explanations in English from time to time. The ceremony went on for a long time.
As far as the term Jew is concerned, I think what may be at play here is similar to an expression that Anja often used with me. If I said something at which she took umbrage, and she objected and I protested that what I had said was not bad, she would answer "C'est le ton qui fait la musique." (It's the tone that makes the music.) I don't think the word "Jew" is any different from the terms Christian, Hindu, Muslim or any other religious designation. Perhaps it's the tone and intention of the person who says it.

I just have one 'era costume' (or at least what I consider it to be) and wore this as a wedding chauffeur - at least the bow tie makes it a bit formal

Yeah Dick, we have our own way to being 'politically correct' for whatever that means !
since a couple years 'negerzoen' is out, they're called chocoladezoen now, but the best thing happened just a month ago, the Jewish Council declared that 'Jodenkoeken' is not a derogatory term and they allow the use of the term for the future

Good grief, can you imagine the effect that it would have on Dutch (especially in Amsterdam) if the Jewish Council started objecting to things? That would be mesjogge!

Re: What do you wear to a wedding?
Here are the first three shots the groom was able to send me. I went out and go a white shirt and bowtie. The groom told me to be informal.
