Help! Stuck Clutch Fork

Recently removed the engine from our 1922 touring to replace damaged field coils, recharge magnets, etc. I have the engine back in the car and replaced the hogshead today. The problem is that the bronze clutch fork is stuck in the down, engaged position. I can jiggle the shaft, but it will not pull up out of the channel that it rides in. If I rotate the crank, everything spins like it should inside the engine (with no obvious binding at the fork) and the car pulls ahead as if in high gear.

So, what did I do? And how do I fix it? Help!

Are you saying it looks like this (picture stolen from the internet without permission):

If it does, it sounds like you are good to go. The collar does not move up and down, rather forward and backward (fore and aft). Does the clutch pedal move between low and high gear if you press on it?

Ahhh! Thank you! Now it's clear. I misunderstood the direction that the fork moves.
