We are on a cruise in Europe, so I decided to give a call for a visit with Rainer Hantsch in Vienna Austria. Very pleasant model T owner with the affliction bad. He has a 16 touring and in the process of rebuilding the transmission. He bought the car a year ago in Munich Germany for way above American prices, but, the seller neglected to tell him the transmission is broken. He said he was so happy to finally buy his first model T but it was raining cats and dogs that he did not have a chance to drive it, so he got screwed. A lesson for us all.
Anyway, we talked for hours, had a great lunch in a beer garden and a nother friend made from across the pond.

Maybe find out what he needs and some of us could send some parts over to him, or maybe carry in luggage if anyone is goin to Austria.

Good idea David. He is on the forum frequently, give him a gingle and ask him, and everyone else is also welcome to chime in. He is very pleasant and knowledgeable and very excited about model T’s.

Hello, everybody.

I was very surprised that Frank touched me by email, asking for a meeting as he is 2 days in Vienna. We finally made it possible and met in a little garden restaurant. It was so wonderful to meet him.

As he mentioned, I am currently rebuilding my '16 Touring. The engine is meanwhile far in progress, this week I brought the Hogshead to a welding specialist for fixing a broken lap at the Universal Joint Flange and a 2" long crack from there towards the maintenance lid.

Here some pictures: Of course, this looks very bad at the moment, but welding was done very well. I have to grind down surplus material now and re-drill the borehole, but this actually is an easy job. Finally it will result in a "brand new" looking Hogshead.
With little luck the sealing compound paste will also arrive tomorrow, then I have everything needed for mounting the Hogshead. Paper gaskets are already bought, I only ran out of sealing paste.

So I am looking forward to reinsert the engine in 1-2 weeks.

May I humbly note, that there may be Model T parts elsewhere in the EU area, which maybe easier and cheaper (no VAT and customs fee) to help Rainer with than send them over from the US.

So Rainer - the idea to list what you need is good. Note also that there are some good Model T groups on Facebook which are monitored by people all over the world and Europe.

UK have unfortunately decided to leave EU, so even though shipping may be cheaper, you may still have the challenge of customs. Note that ORIGINAL parts (not new repro parts) are subject to EU customs class 97.5 - antiques, collectors items etc. where there is NO customs fee and fixed 5% VAT. That goes for import from all non-EU countries - UK and US included.

They throw a great party each New Year's Day at the Vienna Opera House. (I've never been to Yerp, but I used to travel via YouTube.)

Yes, fireworks and celebrating New Year is legendary in Vienna.

Our central cathedral "Stephansdom" (translates to something like "St Stevens Cathedral") has a very big and deep sounding bell (besides of other ones). This huge bell is named "Pummerin". It is normally not used because it is so heavy that the entire church spire is decently moving.
So it is rang only on very momentous occasions, i.e. New Year, therefore. People are waiting in front of the church to hear it, it is also transmitted in TV every year.
It is also usual that people dance the Blue Danube Waltz at New Year.
