2 piece valves
I’ve been talking to a guy who says the late T’s..26/27 didn’t have the 2 piece valves like the earlier T’s did. Is there any truth to this ? Are the 2 piece valves easy to spot? The only way I’ve known is by the 2 holes in the valve head for the lapping tool.

Re: 2 piece valves
They are easy to spot from the underside where the stem joins the head. There is no smooth transition like a modern valve.GG Gregory wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 3:49 pmI’ve been talking to a guy who says the late T’s..26/27 didn’t have the 2 piece valves like the earlier T’s did. Many 1 piece period valves have the 2 holes. Have seen many in T motors also.
I cant say exactly when ford went to the 1 piece valve without consulting McCally.

Re: 2 piece valves
Usually the give away is the twin holes for lapping forked tool. Also, if the surface is clean, you can see the stem junction.
Underside is clearly showing the steel stem, and the cast iron head.
The all steel valves were in the very last motors, around May 31, 1927, except export engines, and service stock was avail. after July 29, 1927.

Re: 2 piece valves
The two piece valves did have the two holes for the lapping tool and this can be a start to identifying them. But, a lot of the replacement one piece valves also had the two holes, so the underside needs to be checked anyway.

Two piece valves... not one of Ford's better ideas.

Re: 2 piece valves
Those two holes were not made for a lapping tool.
They were used to firmly and permanently attach the valve to the stem.

Re: 2 piece valves
A common valve replacement was Dodge valves. 1 piece, larger O.D., with the 2 holes.
I have seen lots of one piece valves with the 2 holes.
I can buy the need for the holes to attach the head, but the practice continued past the 2 piece design.

Re: 2 piece valves
26's certainly did have two piece valves - I know because I ended up with a hole in the cylinder head when one of them broke off.GG Gregory wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 3:49 pmI’ve been talking to a guy who says the late T’s..26/27 didn’t have the 2 piece valves like the earlier T’s did.

Re: 2 piece valves
Probably can check this quickly with a magnet, any good quality valve will have an non magnetic head, and usually a magnetic stem, just sayin.. Dave Sullivan in Bellingham Wa

Re: 2 piece valves
As mentioned the Model T only used two piece valves. Here is an example of the later two piece steel head next to the cast head:
Enjoy!
Matt
Note that the steel valve has a gentle taper that stands out from the cast head:
The steel head valve is marked on the steam “Made in the USA 3025”
And I tested it is not magnetic. That was something new to learn. I guess we should call it alloy steel head because carbon steel should be magnetic.
I disagree with anyone who says two piece valves are worthless. See the background of the photos. They make great handles for my bolt bins!Enjoy!

Re: 2 piece valves
Thanks GG,
The price was right for the pulls! It just cost me some washers and time to cut and pean over the valve steam: Matt
