BINGO … read this!

Post by Mark Osterman » Sat Sep 18, 2021 11:41 am

I had posted yesterday about a ringing sound that appeared recently most noticeable when starting. Well BINGO … the answer deserves its own post for others to keep in mind if they hear a weird jingling sound. One of the exhaust glands had worked its way down through the exhaust pipe and settled at the end of the pipe just before the muffler. I actually thought it was the muffler at the time but when I removed the muffler there it was sitting as neat as you please inside the exhaust pipe. I guess it got deformed during installation and small enough to make the long trip over a period of several months.

Those are the most satisfying discoveries, like whaaala a shake of the head, holding it and looking at the part in disbelief... :!:

Now the gland is properly heat treated so you can just reinstall…. :)

That’s a great find Mark!

Several years ago when I was building my speedster and collecting parts, I picked up a nice used T muffler at Hershey. When I was fitting it to the frame I heard a rattle so I stood the muffler on end and out rolled one of those rings as well!

Where did the copper ring go or is it still doing its job.

This shows the desirability of beefer or solid tube rings.

My sentiments exactly John. Continuous glands cut from a piece of exhaust pipe will cure that.

Allan from down under.
